Stephanie Decker and Anna Curtis, Sociology/Anthropology Department, published an article, “Because we were angry: The formal laws of war versus the military subculture’s code to violence in the Vietnam War and war in Iraq,” in the International Journal of Comparative Sociology. They explored why service members are motivated to violate the laws of war and the social processes that lead them to do so, using grounded theory to consider the question: “Why do American service members regularly fail to comply with the laws of war?”
