The University Police at SUNY Cortland, a police force of 19 sworn officers, coordinates law enforcement and personal safety on campus and University-owned property.
We are an established police department with deep roots in community policing. We firmly believe that our police officers are the guardians of the community. The officers emphasize social service, community partnerships, and establishing positive contacts. Our department follows these principles: treat all people with dignity and respect, give citizens a voice during encounters, be neutral and transparent in decision-making, and convey trustworthy motives.

Crime Alerts
Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the SUNY Cortland University Police Department provides notification to the university community in the form of Crime Alerts (Timely Warnings) and Emergency Mass Notifications (voice, text, email, and sirens) when a significant emergency or dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees, including significant criminal incidents, occurs on campus or in an area surrounding campus that represents a continuing public safety threat. The purpose of the notification is to aid in the prevention of similar crimes by alerting the community about the incident and providing information on actions people can take to diminish their chances of being victimized. Decisions to disseminate a communication will be decided on a case-by-case basis, in light of all the facts surrounding the crime and the continuing danger to the campus community.
