Costa Rica: Sustainable Futures (SUNY University at Buffalo)

This is a service-learning engagement where the studio works on community-identified projects that envision and create futures that are ecologically and socially just. This program focuses on ecological materials and includes hands-on opportunities to explore bio-mimicry, living structures, and repurposed materials.

Summer

This program is themed around agriculture, energy, and eco-tourism: topics particularly unique to Costa Rica. Students participate in regionally specific tours (e.g., coffee farms, hydroelectric facilities, cloud forest research sites), lectures (e.g., from indigenous community leaders, agriculture representatives, government officials), class discussions, outdoor activities (e.g., hiking, bird watching, beaches), assignments, and reflections intended to highlight sustainability in practice.

SUS 316: Cuba and Sustainability

DIS incorporates sustainability into much of their curriculum and Scandinavia is a global leader.

Students engage in real-world applications of science learned in an environmental and sustainability context. Local faculty will hold lectures on topics related to sustainability, ongoing issues in climate change, environmental degradation, and conservation efforts in Ecuador. France: Interior Design 310: Adaptive Reuse: Community Place Making (FIT Faculty-led)

This course is offered to Interior Design students working for three weeks either in an international design office or classroom environment. Students are exposed to strategic planning methods of design and their impact on local redevelopment, and are introduced to the process of critical evaluation of existing city and neighborhood resources, which will support their proposals for an interior design group project. With an emphasis on adaptive reuse and re-purposing existing interior spaces, students will propose design ideas for cultural, residential and commercial uses.

Guatemala: Guatemala FLP - Water and the Environment of Guatemala

Water and the Environment of Guatemala is an international field course that prepares students to find solutions to contemporary water resources issues in the developing world. Students will take water samples and analyze water quality data from Lake Atitlán and the surrounding watershed. Based on observations, interactions with residents, and data collection, students will identify sustainable solutions to local water resources problems. Students will also be exposed to Guatemala's natural systems, from volcanoes and climate to soils and biomes as they relate to water.

For this program, students will explore multiple aspects of the renewable energy landscape in Iceland, from meeting with various stakeholders in the renewable energy sector, to visiting the different sites where the renewable energy itself is produced. Simultaneously, students will be able to explore all of the beauty and wonders of the Icelandic landscape.

SUNY students can participate through Binghamton, which is slightly more affordable than going directly through SIT. However, it is not mandatory for other SUNY students to go through Binghamton. Students should apply through Binghamton simultaneously with SIT. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but are due no later than March 1. Early application is strongly recommended as this program is popular and tends to book up quickly

Summer

This program is very excursion based, with consistent trips being a part of the itinerary. It is also particularly research-based. Students complete a 6-credit research project which is at the center of their experience. Students also receive formal instruction on topics related to climate change, as well as have the opportunity to meet and discuss climate models and carbon management from experts. Students will get to conduct fieldwork of their own, informed by SIT's Research Methods and Ethics in the Arctic course.

This course will focus on fundamentals of renewable energy sources, the feasibility of renewable source development assessed through techno-economic and life cycle analysis (LCA), and their positive impact on local communities. Students will explore local culture, enjoy multi-ethnic culinary experience while attending a series of lectures on topics related to Sustainable Future through Renewable Energy. Renewable sources could play a vital role in achieving manageable atmospheric CO 2 levels by 2035. Students will also participate in a special experiential learning excursion to the Himalayas where renewable energy is starting to get interwoven into the society.
