On behalf of the SUNY Cortland community, I extend warm greetings! Housed in a safe and beautiful small-town environment, SUNY Cortland is committed to addressing the needs of each and every student. We offer 68 undergraduate majors and nearly 40 graduate programs. The average undergraduate class size is 27 students, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1. Our size allows students to become fully involved in their classroom studies while providing ample opportunities to develop meaningful relationships with other students and professors. SUNY Cortland is strongly committed to these four priorities:

Academic Excellence

SUNY Cortland’s challenging curriculum is composed of a rich blend of liberal arts and professional courses. Classes are taught by extraordinary faculty who engage students in lively discussions and hands-on learning experiences.

Highly qualified students are invited to apply for admission to the Honors Program, an academically rigorous program designed to challenge the academic potential of intellectually and creatively talented students. Honors Program students attend seminar-style classes and have special access to speakers and visiting scholars.

In meeting the challenges of change in today’s world, SUNY Cortland strongly encourages the technological education of its students. We have open access computer facilities and several special purpose computer labs featuring both Windows and Macintosh computers. In addition, there are several email express stations available for email and internet access.  

Transformational Education

Learning at SUNY Cortland is not limited to the classroom. Eligible students have access to hands-on internship and cooperative education opportunities in New York and around the world. Fieldwork and student teaching enable preservice teachers to apply theory to practice in the classroom.

In addition, the university offers more than 40 enriching study abroad programs around the globe at locations including Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, China, India, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Egypt, and Australia. Students have additional access to over 600 study abroad programs throughout the SUNY System.

Our students also have the opportunity to choose from an impressive list of more than 100 clubs, organizations, civic engagement and volunteer activities. Concerts, films, picnics, lectures and other cultural events come to campus throughout the year.

Well-Being

SUNY Cortland is committed to the overall well-being of every student. In 2015, the Student Life Center was opened to provide a wide variety of physical recreation components and social spaces for all students.

With one of the most robust NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic programs in the United States, SUNY Cortland has 14 women’s and 11 men’s varsity teams. SUNY Cortland Red Dragons are proud of our decades-long legacy of winning in athletics.

Recreational Sports offers an outstanding intramural sports program for men and women, with 60 different intramural sports and special events, and a sport club program with 38 clubs.
