Each year, SUNY Cortland welcomes nominations for SUNY Chancellor’s Awards, nominations for the promotion to the Distinguished Academy rank and other system-wide honors.

SUNY Chancellor’s Horizon Awards for Faculty Research and Scholarship

The SUNY system has established the SUNY Chancellor’s Horizon Awards for Faculty and Scholarship, a new award created to recognize early career faculty for their scholarly or creative activities.

The nomination submission link and full policies and procedures are available online. Submissions are due Friday, Feb. 28, 2025.

Eligibility is limited to faculty in tenure-track or tenured positions who are up to seven years beyond the date of initial appointment to their position. This award is open to faculty across all disciplines, including performance-based or creative disciplines.

Please also note that nominations must be submitted by faculty with full professor status in the same or related department or division as the nominee and on the same campus. Self-nominations are not allowed. 

The nomination portfolio must include:

  • An abstract, no longer than 200 words
  • A nomination letter, no longer than two pages
  • An external letter of support from a senior scholar in the field, no longer than two pages
  • A brief CV, no longer than two pages

SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Classified Service

Please complete the required nomination form. If detailed justification is included with the submission form, it should not exceed two typed pages. The university may present one award in this category for 2024-25. Nominations may be submitted by email to president@cortland.edu.

Candidates who are selected must meet the following criteria:

  1. Completion of at least three years of continuous, full-time permanent service in the classified service position for which individuals are nominated.
  2. Continuous demonstration of outstanding achievement, skill and commitment to excellence in fulfilling the job description for the position held.
  3. Demonstrated excellence in activities beyond the scope of the job description. The ideal candidate will demonstrate creativity and flexibility in performing their position to meet campus needs. Special consideration will be given to employees who consistently provide exemplary customer service to students, staff, patients and other members of the campus community.

Nominations may be submitted to the campus selection committee by a supervisor, coworker or other member of the campus community, but individuals may not nominate themselves for these awards.


SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence

Please consider writing a nominating letter for a deserving colleague for a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in one of the following categories:

  • Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

  • Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service

  • Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities

  • Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service

  • Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship

  • Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching

Please note: The Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service is managed through the President’s Office. A separate call for nominations takes place in the spring semester. Please contact president@cortland.edu with questions about this award. 

The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence is managed through the Division of Student Affairs. A separate call for nominations takes place in the fall semester. Please contact the Division of Student Affairs with questions about this award. 


SUNY Distinguished Rank Promotion

Please consider writing a letter for a full professor to nominate them to the rank reserved for the university’s most distinguished professors in one of the following categories:

  • Distinguished Professorship

  • Distinguished Service Professorship

  • Distinguished Teaching Professorship

  • Distinguished Librarian
