Student Life Center General Facility Rules (Updated 9/25/2024)

      • The goal of the SUNY Cortland Campus Recreation Department is to provide a variety of recreational opportunities that contribute to the physical, emotional and social health of all members of our University community. We will continuously develop programs and activities for our participants to increase their positive use of leisure time, improve their quality of life and encourage them to commit to a lifetime of fitness and recreation participation.

      • Inherent risks are associated with every recreational activity. Participants assume these risks when they agree to participate. All participants are strongly advised to secure health insurance and visit their physician for a physical examination prior to registration or participation. All those who enter must sign a Student Life Center Acknowledgement of Risk, Waiver and Release of Liability Form before using the facility.
      • All participants must have a current Student Life Center membership in order to enter the facility. Membership may be confirmed/purchased in the Campus Recreation Office, Monday-Friday, Student Life Center, Room 1201, 8:00a.m. – 4:00p.m.

      • All Participants must present a valid SUNY Cortland ID Card or Student Life Center Membership Card each time they enter.

The Campus Recreation Office reserves the right to eject anyone whose behavior is unruly or illegal in nature. Membership privileges will be revoked without a refund and the individual(s) will be escorted from the facility. UPD may be contacted.

      • All participants are responsible for their ID card and its use. Allowing someone else to use your ID card is violation of college policy. Violators of this policy will be referred to the Student Conduct Office and may lose their privilege of using the Student Life Center.

      • Guests will be allowed with a current Student Life Center member at the rate of $5/day.

      • All those wishing to attend Group Exercise classes must purchase memberships or a drop-in day pass prior to attending classes.

      • Personal training or other instruction for pay or trade by outside entities is strictly prohibited and could jeopardize membership privileges for all parties involved. Personal training and instruction is limited to Campus Recreation staff.
      • Campus Recreation takes seriously its obligations under the University’s Child Protection Policy. Any Authorized Minor under the age of eighteen (18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times in the Facility, with the exception of single occupancy restrooms or single stall toilets. Under no circumstances should an Authorized Minor ever be unaccompanied without a parent or guardian in the swimming pool or locker room areas (again, with the exception of single occupancy restrooms or single stall toilets).

      • All fitness equipment should be used consistent with posted Campus Recreation or manufacturer’s guidance on proper use, including with regard to age, fitness, and proper usage technique. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that Authorized Minors follow such guidance.

      • All Authorized Users under the age of [11] are strictly prohibited from utilizing cardiovascular fitness machines and weight training equipment and must follow all posted restrictions. If a higher minimum age is posted for a particular piece of equipment or equipment category, that minimum age should be followed.

      • Campus Recreation reserves the right to eject anyone for any unsafe use of equipment, or any other behavior or activity that poses a danger to the health or safety of Authorized Users or Campus Recreation staff, or to the personal property of Campus Recreation.

      • Participants must respect the authority of any Campus Recreation Staff and respond to their directions accordingly.

      • Participants must wear athletic apparel at all times. This also includes athletic sneakers (no open footwear or bare feet).

      • No food or drink allowed, except water in plastic, re-sealable containers.

      • Profanity, suggestive language, and aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.

      • Bags, coats, and personal items are not allowed on the floor or within walkways. Lockers and cubbies are available. Recreational Sports, Student Affairs, and SUNY Cortland are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

      • Participants will refrain from use of drugs and/or alcohol prior to and during use of facility.
      • Participants will not behave in a manner that may cause or contribute to injury to themselves or others.

      • Lacrosse balls, baseballs and softballs are not allowed in the Student Life Center.

      • Participants are responsible for damage and repair costs associated with reckless or negligent use of equipment and/or facilities.

      • Failure to comply with any of the rules of the Recreational Sports Department may result in, but is not limited to, ejection from the facility and/or loss of privilege for future use.

      • Lost and found is located in Equipment Checkout. Items of greater value will be brought to the University Police Department.

      • Photography and videotaping of any kind is strictly prohibited in restroom and locker room areas. Participants are not allowed to film within the facility without permission from the Campus Recreation Department.

      • All bags or other personal items should be stored in lockers or cubbies. Any unattended items not stored in lockers or cubbies will be collected and brought to the lost & found area. Unclaimed items will be handled consistent with state law.
