Kathleen A. Lawrence
Kathleen A. Lawrence, Communication Studies Department, had a poem, “Inglorious Bastards,” published recently by New Verse News. It is an abecedarian about the allegations of sexual assault, predatory behavior and abuse of power by some of Hollywood’s high-profile directors, producers, actors and comedians. Also, she had her poem, “Three’s a Crowd,” a hay(na)ku, accepted for publication by The Borfski Press for Issue III.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, was invited to present a paper titled “Comparing the Constitutional Presidencies of Bush and Obama: War Powers, Signing Statements, Vetoes” for a conference on “Change in the White House? Comparing the Presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.” The conference was held at Hofstra University on April 19 and hosted by Hofstra’s Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency.
Lorraine Lopez-Janove
Lorraine Lopez-Janove, chief diversity and inclusion officer, was named to the president’s cabinet. The cabinet is made up of university vice presidents who participate in all aspects of institutional planning and assisting departments to meet the needs of diverse student, faculty and staff populations. Prior to joining SUNY Cortland in August, Lopez-Janove served as the joint chief diversity officer for the SUNY Orange, SUNY Sullivan and SUNY Ulster community college campuses and served on the president’s cabinet at those institutions.
Claus Schubert
Claus Schubert, Mathematics Department, presented “Semiorderings and Stability Index Under Field Extensions” at the 2011 Joint Mathematics Meetings on Jan. 6 in New Orleans, La. The talk was part of an American Mathematical Society (AMS) special session on quadratic forms in algebra and geometry and summarized joint work with Karim Becher from the University of Konstanz, Germany, and David Leep from the University of Kentucky.
Marley Barduhn
Marley Barduhn, Division of Academic Affairs, has received $22,273 from the U.S. Department of Education for her project titled “Comenzar Even Start Project” for the period Oct. 1, 2010 through Sept. 30, 2011.
Mary Lynch Kennedy
Mary Lynch Kennedy, English Department, received the 2010 Educator of Excellence Award from the New York State English Council. Kennedy’s Theorizing Composition: A Critical Sourcebook of Theory and Scholarship in Contemporary Composition Studies, Greenwood 1998, IAP 2006, has been released as an e-book.
Susan Wilson
Susan Wilson, Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies Department, has received, via Cornell University and through the New York State Compact via Washington Campus Compact, funding for eight intern service slots. Her proposal is titled “Students in Service AmeriCorps Program.” Interns will receive $1,200 upon completion of internship or service.
Ted Fay
Ted Fay, Sport Management Department, was a keynote speaker at the 2011 NCAA Scholarly Colloquium on College Sports held Jan. 12 in San Antonio, Texas. His topic was “Sports and Disabilities.”
Mechthild Nagel and Seth Asumah
Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy and Africana Studies departments, and Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies, and Seth Asumah, Africana Studies and Political Science departments, presented a talk at the 2014 National Conference of Black Political Scientists, on March 13 in Wilmington, Del. The talk was based on their article, “Diversity Studies and Managing Differences – Unpacking SUNY Cortland's Case and National Trends,” recently published in the book Sprache - Macht – Rassismus(Language-Power-Racism), by G. Hentges, K. Nottbohm, M. M. Jansen and J. Adamou (eds.), Metropol Verlag, 2014, pages 349-466.
