John Suarez
John Suarez, Institute for Civic Engagement and service-learning coordinator, learned that his socio-economic docu-drama was accepted for inclusion in the final “Engaged Faculty Institute Curriculum,” to be published by the California Campus Compact, Campus Compact of the Mountain West and Community-Campus Partnerships for Health. Through this curriculum, faculty members will participate in an intensive, hands-on experience to integrate service-learning into a new or existing course. The curriculum includes research-based content, tools and resources, worksheets, reflections and assessment tools for course design, or re-design, impact assessment and sustainability.
Carolyn Bershad
Carolyn Bershad, Counseling and Student Development, presented with Drs. Susan Stock and Heidi Levine on “Leadership and Development: Many Paths, Many Stories” at the annual convention of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), held March 5-8 in Tampa, Fla. The program was sponsored by ACPA’s Mid-Level Community of Practice. Bershad also completed her term as past-chair for ACPA’s Commission for Counseling and Psychological Services at the convention.

John Suarez, Institute for Civic Engagement and Office of Service-Learning, was a panelist in the Aug. 19 “Leaders Learning Live: Effectively Managing Student Assistants,” conducted by the SUNY Academic and Innovative Leadership (SAIL) Institute. Suarez praised the value of giving interns the freedom, responsibility and authority to conduct projects. He emphasized the importance of providing training, resources, encouragement and tailored reflection prompts. He drew on the successes of the Institute for Civic Engagement’s Action Team interns.
Melissa Morris
Melissa Morris, Physics Department, and collaborators, had their work featured in the headline article in the October issue of Planetary Science Research Discoveries. “Accretional Layers Preserved in a Meteorite” details their research on how the visible sequence of layers in the Isheyevo meteorite tells a story of impact debris deposited, layer by layer, onto the surface of the surviving planetesimal. Also, Morris and collaborators, including SUNY Cortland senior Matt Metcalf, submitted a paper to The Astrophysical Journal Letters, titled “Thermal History of CBb Chondrules and Cooling Rate Distributions of Ejecta Plumes.”

Tadayuki Suzuki, Literacy Department, presented “Implementing the DLTA with Kamishibai (Japanese Paper Theater)” at the New York State Reading Association Conference on Nov. 14 in Rochester, N.Y.
Charee’ Grover
Charee’ Grover, residence hall director for Alger Hall, participated in the Association of College and Personnel Administrators (ACPA) Conference held March 26-30 in Baltimore, Md. Grover serves on the Commission for Faith, Spirituality, Religion and Meaning as a directorate member and will serve on that commission until 2013.
John Hartsock
John Hartsock, Communication Studies Department, was invited to give a reading from his book Seasons of a Finger Lakes Winery (Cornell University Press) on April 29 at the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center in Sleepy Hollow (formerly North Tarrytown), N.Y. He read from the first chapter of the volume. Afterwards he discussed the challenges of making wine in the Finger Lakes, and the similarities and differences between Finger Lakes and French white and red wines. The audience then tasted wines from Long Point Winery, which is located near Aurora on Cayuga Lake and is the subject of the book.
Mechthild Nagel
Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and the Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), presented “What to do with the dangerous few? Empathy deficit reconsidered” at the conference titled “The Politics of Plasticity: On Solidarity and Mutual Aid with Catherine Malabou,” held Feb. 23 and 24 at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague. Nagel is a research fellow at the Czech Academy of Sciences Department of Contemporary Continental Philosophy.

John Suarez, the Institute for Civic Engagement’s coordinator of the Office of Service-Learning, peer-reviewed “Writing Partners: Bridging the Personal and Social in the Service-Learning Classroom,” a chapter for an upcoming book titled Culturally Engaging Service-Learning in Diverse Communities.
