Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, recently spoke with a reporter for Rewire News about the new anti-transgender legislation in Idaho which bans transgender girls and women from participating in school-sponsored competitive sports programs. Newhall spoke about the problematic categorizations and measurements of sex and gender employed in the regulations, which unfairly discriminate against trans athletes.

Deborah Matheron
Deborah Matheron, Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, was an invited speaker at the 56th annual New York State Speech-Language Pathology Convention on April 9 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The two-hour talk was titled “Speech Breathing and Laryngeal Function in Individuals with PD and Individuals With MS: Underlying Physiology and Current Research.”
Maria Timberlake
Maria Timberlake, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, received the Daring to Dream Award in Social Change from the Center for Community Inclusion at the University of Maine. She was recognized on June 18 for vision and leadership that promotes social change to advance the rights of people with disabilities.
Julie Ficarra and Sam Avery
Julie Ficarra, International Programs Office, and Sam Avery, Communication Studies Department, presented at the 17th International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement Annual Conference held at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Julie presented on problematizing issues of race, power and the “helping imperative” in service-learning programs in the Global South; and together, they co-presented a film project exploring the politics of space, memory and belonging for two immigrant groups on the north side of the city of Syracuse.

Robert Darling, Geology Department, presented a paper titled “Zircon-adhering, Crystallized Melt Inclusions in Peritectic Garnet from the Western Adirondacks, New York State, USA” at the 23rd V. M. Goldschmidt Conference held in June in Montreal.
Nancy Kane
Nancy Kane, Performing Arts Department, was awarded one of the highest honors given to statewide United University Professions members at a ceremony held Oct. 4 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The SUNY union gave her the 2013 Fayez Samuel Award for Courageous Service by a Part Time Faculty Member for her work on behalf of the LGBTQIA community at SUNY Cortland. In Kane’s acceptance speech, she acknowledged the efforts of fellow union members, allies at the Cortland campus and across the state, and especially the students, faculty and professionals who fight discrimination and bullying on campus.

Deborah Warnock, Sociology/Anthropology Department, presented about class and and higher education on two panels at the annual meetings of the Working Class Studies Association in early June at SUNY Stony Brook.

Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of two recent articles: “An Assault Weapons Gambit Backfires,” which appeared on the editorial page of the New York Daily News on April 9, and “Sensible Regulation of Guns,” which appeared in the Sunday opinion section of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle on April 13.
