David Kilpatrick, Psychology Department, was a panelist for the Central New York Reading Council’s presentation “Dyslexia: Definitions, Issues, and Instructional Responses” on Sept. 21. Dr. Elliott from Durham University, UK, presented a keynote followed by a panel discussion which included Elliott, Kilpatrick, Donna Scanlon from SUNY Albany and Bong Gee Jang from Syracuse University.

Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of the just-published seventh edition of his book, The Politics of Gun Control. First published in 1995, the book has become the standard on the subject. It has been updated to include the most recent developments of this controversial subject and is published by Routledge Publishers.

Melissa Morris, Physics Department, has been asked by Scientific American to comment on a recent paper appearing in the peer-reviewed journal Icarus titled “A new mechanism for chondrule formation: Radiative heating by hot planetesimals,” by Herbst & Greenwood (2016).
Jeremiah Donovan
Jeremiah Donovan, Art and Art History Department, had his recent ceramic sculptural work selected by jury for inclusion in the Arnot Art Museum’s 73rd Fine Art Exhibition in Elmira, N.Y. The exhibit includes 16 selected artists using various mediums. It will open Tuesday, Oct. 11, and continue through Friday, Feb. 3, 2012.

Kevin Dames
Kevin Dames, Kinesiology Department, recently coauthored a paper with graduate student Jennifer Kraft MS ’19, Connor Lewis ’20, Ryan Fiddler, who is a former kinesiology faculty member, and Jacqueline Augustine, Kinesiology Department. The paper is titled Bodyweight support alters the relationship between preferred walking speed and cost of transport. We demonstrated that the self-selected walking speed with bodyweight support does not correspond to the speed which elicits the lowest cost of transport. These findings have implications for clinical populations (e.g., obese, elderly) who may benefit from walking on a bodyweight supporting treadmill but may select speeds incompatible with their physical activity goals.

Fitzgerald, Biological Sciences Department, is the author of a research paper titled “Colonies of the Eastern Tent Caterpillar Malacosoma americanum (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) Abandon Trails to Depleted Feeding Sites and Follow the Most Direct and Shortest Pathways Between their Tent and Food-Finds” appearing in the current issue of the Journal of Insect Behavior.

Gregory D. Phelan, Chemistry Department, was featured in the Sept. 14 issue of the journal Science in an article titled “Finding Balance: The Professor/Entrepreneur,” by Alaina Levine. The article includes a photo of Phelan as well as numerous direct quotes.
