Kristine Newhall

Kristine Newhall, Kinesiology Department, was a guest on the British podcast, “Reasons to be Cheerful,” hosted by former Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband in July. In the episode “A Question of Sport: The Fight for Gender Equality,” she talked about Title IX, the Women’s World Cup, and the state of gender equality in sports in the U.S. 

Christopher Badurek

Christopher Badurek, Geography Department, was elected president of the New York State GIS Association at the 2019 NYS GIS Conference held Sept. 21 to 23 in Syracuse, N.Y. Also, he was co-chair of the conference and gave two presentations on integrating geographic information systems (GIS) and Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS), frequently referred to as drones. 

Geography Department faculty and staff members Wendy Miller, Melinda Shimizu and Adam Levine also each presented their recent projects at this primary conference for academics and professionals working in the GIS industry. The presentations covered use of GIS tools for community-based applied learning projects as well as the Campus Tree Walk App for the Cortland campus.

In addition, four students Badurek mentored presented posters, including: “Assessment of Land Use Land Cover Change 2009-2015 around Onondaga Lake, NY” and “Application of GIS in an Interdisciplinary Field Course on Sustainable Development of Adirondack Park, NY.” They also presented a report on a collaborative course at Camp Huntington on Raquette Lake. Collaborators are Badurek, assistant professor of economics Ben Wilson and history professor Scott Moranda, with support from the SUNY Cortland Common Problems Pedagogy Project. Student participation in the conference was supported by a grant facilitated by the Cortland College Foundation.

James F. Hokanson, Bryanne N. Bellovary and Erik Lind

James F. Hokanson, Bryanne N. Bellovary and Erik Lind, Kinesiology Department, along with three exercise science students, Madison Rees, Danielle Toth and Matthew Ballesteros, presented multiple papers at the State of New York Undergraduate Research Conference hosted by Buffalo State on April 23. The research focused on investigations of changes in body weight perception, heart rate and blood pressure while standing in an Alter-G lower body positive pressure treadmill.

Mechthild Nagel

Mechthild Nagel, Philosophy Department and Center for Gender and Intercultural Studies, had her article, “Ubuntu and African Prison Intellectuals” published in the Spring 2013 journal of the International Society for the Study of European Ideas.

 

Joshua Peluso

Joshua Peluso, Systems Administration and Web Services, served on a panel to discuss “Web Apps and Responsive Web Design,” at the SUNY Technology Conference held June 18 in Lake Placid, N.Y. The panel discussion was sponsored by the SUNY Council of Chief Information Officers.

Christopher McRoberts

Christopher McRoberts, Geology Department, presented the keynote address on the end-Triassic mass extinction at the Museum of the Earth/Paleontological Research Institution’s 2011 Summer Symposium. He also recently published in the Journal of Paleontology a 55-page monograph on the taxonomy and biostratigraphy of Late Triassic bivalve fossils from northeastern British Columbia, Canada.

Chris Widdall

Chris Widdall, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, presented “Effectively Using Mobile Technology in the STEM Classroom” at the 2014 Noyce NE Regional Conference held March 20-22 in Philadelphia, Pa. During this hands-on workshop, Widdall gave participants the opportunity to see and use apps to supplement a lesson, engage students, design projects, collect data and use app-in-app tools, while showcasing the power of math and science. The presentation focused on the OS mobile platform, with infusion of Android and some cross-platform apps.

Vierne Placide

Vierne Placide, Health Department, presented a paper titled “Factors influencing opioid abstinence and retention in Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid addiction” during the Opioids and Behavioral Health plenary session, in addition to a poster presentation titled “Providing integrative services with an integrative workforce in Generation Rx: A review” at the 2019 Public Health Partnership Conference (NYSPHA/NYSACHO), held May 1 to 3 in Cortland, N.Y.

Tadayuki Suzuki

Tadayuki Suzuki, Literacy Department, will present “Art of Pleasure: Reviving the Joy of Reading,” at the Kentucky Reading Association’s annual conference in October. In November, he will present “Still Missing: How Should Teacher Educators Include LGBT Family-themed Picture Books in Curricula for Primary Grades?” at the National Association for Multicultural Education in Tucson, Ariz. Also in November, he will present “Stories to Tell—Listening to the Words in LGBT Themed Children’s Literature” at the National Council of Teachers of English in Washington, D.C. 

Christina Knopf

Christina Knopf, Communication and Media Studies Department, had her new book, Politics in the Gutters: American Politicians & Elections in Comic Book Media, published by the University Press of Mississippi. A critical examination of the intersection of popular culture and real-world politics, as occurring in graphic narratives, it is described as a “tremendous contribution to many fields—political science, media and communications, literature, American studies, and comics studies.”
