Sustainable Cortaca

Sustainable Cortaca

In collaboration with the Ithaca College Sustainability Office. We present Sustainability at Cortaca 2026 in Yankee Stadium. See below for how to travel to the travel with fewer emissions and some of the sustainability highlights of the stadium.

Transportation

Being located in New York City, Yankee Stadium is closest to one of the greatest mass transit systems in the world. Yankee Stadium does not own any public parking garages. With this in mind, guests and employees are encouraged to use public transportation. This helps reduce the number of cars on the road thereby greenhouse gas emissions.

Subway

The BD and 4 trains stop at 161 St-Yankee Stadium. Follow the signs within the station to Yankee Stadium.

Metro-North Railroad & Long Island Railroad

Fifteen minutes from Grand Central Station, the Yankee's E 153rd Street station is on Metro-North's Hudson line.

For LIRR service, take a train to Grand Central, then ride Metro-North to Yankees-E 153rd Street or the 4to 161 St-Yankee Stadium. Use the MTA TrainTime app to buy a single ticket to get from your LIRR station to Grand Central or Yankees-E 153rd Street

The easiest ways to get schedules and see exact fare is to use the MTA TrainTime app.

Bus

Five buses stop near Yankee Stadium:

For more details on the locations of these stops see Bronx bus schedules or the Bronx bus map.

Bike

In collaboration with the NYC Department of Transportation, the Yankees have high-capacity bike sharing stations at three convenient locations around the Stadium.

Waste

In an effort to achieve zero waste and promote a circular economy, the Yankees have a variety of sustainability features centered around waste.

Compostable cutlery, trays, boxes, plates and cups are used around the stadium instead of petroleum-based plastics which are not compostable.

Food waste is composted. Cardboard, glass, metal, plastics and paper are recycled.

With these initiatives in place, the Yankees are able to divert a lot of waste from landfills.

Food

During the season, cooking oil is recovered and recycled to produce biodiesel fuel. This results in a carbon reduction.

By the Stadium's Gate 2 entrance, there is the Tower Garden, a vertical aeroponic garden system which grows fresh produce with minimal resources. The Tower Garden provides a learning opportunity for students' part of the "New York Yankees Healthy Home Plate Program". Produce grown in the garden are served on the menu, most notably the salads in the grab-and-go locations. The tower was introduced in 2022, when the Yankees partnered with Towers Farms and Green Bronx Machine.

Water Conservation

Through careful monitoring and high efficiency plumbing fixtures, Yankee Stadiums has reduced its water use by 22% based on water use prior to 2009. The stadium saves roughly more than 3 million gallons of water each year.

Energy

The Yankees use more efficient and brighter LED bulbs. This increase in color and temperature of the light produced results in a higher contrast which is known to improve player reaction time, alertness and visual acuity.

Guests enter through the Great Hall, the largest open air public entry at any sports venue in the world. This 31,000 square-foot space allows for natural cooling and ventilation. Through the use of natural air-cooling, the energy savings per game is approximately the same as 125 New York City apartments shutting off their air-conditioning on a hot summer day.

Climate Commitments

The New York Yankees became the first major North American sports team to sign on to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework on April 3, 2019. The mission of the program is to bring greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Climate Change Agreement with hopes to inspire others to take ambitious climate action.
