What We Do

We have many services to make your library experience both helpful and memorable. We can help you by checking out your books, giving assistance with technology, advising you on research questions, or ordering books or articles from other libraries. If you need help, please ask any of the faculty and staff at the library.

Student Reading

Borrowing

You can borrow most of the books and other items found in the library, and the library has a generous loan period for students, faculty and community members. Your teachers and faculty may put books on reserve. Items are borrowed and returned at the The Help Center. Fines are charged for late and damaged items - but don't forget you can renew most books online through the "Login" link in the catalog.

Research Help

The Research Help desk, located in the main lobby next to the Help Center, is staffed by librarians who can help you find trustworthy information and cite it. You can also chat with a librarian 24/7, or make a one-on-one research appointment to work with the librarian who supports your specific major.

Interlibrary Loan

If our library doesn’t have what you need, it is likely that the item can be borrowed from another library. For further information on this service, see our Interlibrary Loan FAQs.

Instruction

The librarians offer interactive sessions on research strategies, source evaluation, citations, and more instruction resources.

Community Borrowers

Individuals living near SUNY Cortland may be eligible for a card allowing books to be checked out. Please see our borrowing policy for more information. Our online catalog will allow you to see what books we have. Contact the library via email at library@cortland.edu to check your account, renew books and see any fines charged.

Checking Out Books from Other SUNY Libraries

As a member of the SUNY Cortland community, you can walk in and borrow books from other SUNY campuses, but the items must be returned by the patron to the location they were borrowed from.

Technology

Technology Support

Using technology is important in the life of students and faculty and we are dedicated to providing the help you need to work with the various technologies available on campus and in the library. Please be sure to ask at the The Help Center for help when you need it.

Brightspace Support

Many of the classes at SUNY Cortland are enhanced by using a learning management system. SUNY Cortland uses Brightspace. eLearning can range from a course being offered completely online to having supplemental class materials posted in an online version. Faculty building courses or an online presence can get help at Design Help located in Memorial Library.

Production and Faculty Support

Students in the classroom and disciplines often demand multiple modes of teaching including the use of technology.  Design Help provides strong offerings of support to faculty in the development of courses using technology and instructional design.
