Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Financial aid can help fund study abroad programs. Early planning greatly reduces financial challenges and allows you to prepare ahead with savings, scholarships, private education loans and other sources of financial aid. Once you have researched, identified, received academic approval, and applied for the program of your choice, you will then work with the Financial Aid Office to finalize your financial aid budget and discuss your available financial aid funding.

Eligibility

  • You must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at SUNY Cortland and be making satisfactory academic progress as defined by the College and by the Financial Aid Office
  • Study abroad courses must earn credits and be applicable toward your degree program at SUNY Cortland
  • Submit aid-year specific FAFSA and complete verification if required
  • Submit aid-year specific TAP application

Ineligibility

  • You will not receive financial aid for study abroad courses that are not applicable to your degree program
  • You may not receive financial aid to study abroad if you postpone your graduation
  • You will not be able to receive Federal Work-Study funds while you study abroad
  • Certain scholarships may not be used toward study abroad expenses

Next Steps

  1. Make an appointment with your financial aid advisor to discuss aid eligibility and be aware that:
    • You should bring the International Program Budget Sheet to the meeting to discuss costs
    • Financial aid is often not available until after a program starts and costs may be incurred prior to departure
    • Posting of late grades due to study abroad may impact future federal and state aid eligibility
    • You will be held accountable for any outstanding balance on your bill if financial aid is reduced or cancelled due to ineligible courses if they do not apply toward your degree program after completion
    • It is your responsibility to notify the Financial Aid Office if courses are withdrawn from, course load is reduced, or if the study abroad program is not attended
    1. Apply for available Study Abroad Scholarships and SUNY Cortland Scholarships
    2. Remember to confirm your attendance and pay your bill (if applicable) prior to travelling
    3. If you’re expecting a financial aid refund, we suggest you enroll in direct deposit. If you’re studying abroad through another university’s program and you want your refund sent to that school, please contact the Cortland Student Accounts office
