John Suarez
John Suarez, Institute for Civic Engagement, participated in a planning meeting on Aug. 2 of the newly-formed “Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania.” Participants identified priorities and resources that the new organization can help them with as they work on projects such as data collection and assessment.
Also, Suarez’s article on the Institute’s Action Team was published in the August 2018 issue of Umbrella, the SUNY System’s Applied Learning newsletter. The article describes ways in which the Action Team’s interns built the Institute’s capacity through their entrepreneurial spirit.
Charlotte L. Pass
Charlotte L. Pass, Literacy Department, co-presented the workshop “A Cluster of Others,” addressing the practice of “othering” and ways to increase student awareness of its enactment at the combined Australian Association of Teachers of English and Australian Literacy Educators Association Annual Conference held July 6 to 9 in Hobart, Australia.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled, “Researching Gun Policy: Futile or Feasible?” that was posted Oct. 16 on the Social Science Research Council website, “Items: Insights from the Social Sciences.”
Jaroslava Prihodova
Jaroslava Prihodova, Dowd Gallery, was interviewed by the Cortland Standard about her role as gallery director for an article that was published Monday, April 10 titled “She stays surrounded by art.” It is also available online on the publication’s website (for subscribers only) and promoted on its Instagram page.
Gregory D. Phelan
Gregory D. Phelan, Chemistry Department, had a United States patents issue in February. The patents is numbered 9,567,255 and is titled Light Weight Structural Materials. The patents deal with reducing the density of polymeric structural materials by incorporating hollow microstructures into the matrix of the pyloric materials. More information can be found here.
Maria Timberlake
Maria Timberlake, Foundations and Social Advocacy Department, received the Daring to Dream Award in Social Change from the Center for Community Inclusion at the University of Maine. She was recognized on June 18 for vision and leadership that promotes social change to advance the rights of people with disabilities.
Deborah Matheron
Deborah Matheron, Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, was an invited speaker at the 56th annual New York State Speech-Language Pathology Convention on April 9 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The two-hour talk was titled “Speech Breathing and Laryngeal Function in Individuals with PD and Individuals With MS: Underlying Physiology and Current Research.”
Christina Knopf
Christina Knopf, Communication and Media Studies Department, is a recipient of the annual Lucy Shelton Caswell Research Award for 2023, sponsored by the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at The Ohio State University.
Chang Ki Bahng
Chang Ki Bahng, a graduate student in the Sport Management Program, was appointed an Official International Referee by the USA Taekwondo Association to officiate the 2010 United States Open International Taekwondo Championships held Feb. 10-15 in Las Vegas, Nev. The event is one of the oldest and most prestigious taekwondo championships in the world, hosted by the USA Taekwondo Association, sanctioned by the World Taekwondo Federation and sponsored by the United States Olympic Committee.
Marni Gauthier
Marni Gauthier, English Department, had her essay, “Historical Figures Transformed: Free Enterprise and I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem,” published in Beyond Adaptation: Essays on Radical Transformations of Original Works (McFarland: March 2010).
