Recent Award Recipients

The following awards were sent for 2026 Honors Convocation:

Emma Caraher — Anthropology Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Pierce Burm — Rozanne M. Brooks Sociology Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Jessica Kam— Criminology Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement

International Honor Society in Sociology
Alpha Kappa Delta

Students who major in sociology, are junior or senior status, earn an overall average of 3.2 or higher and a 3.0 or higher in at least 12 hours of sociology courses are eligible for election to the New York Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the national sociology honorary society. Normally, invitations to join are sent out in March, and those accepting membership are honored at a luncheon held in May prior to graduation ceremonies.

The purpose of the organization is to encourage and recognize academic excellence in the study and practice of sociology. In some instances, membership brings a small point average bonus on federal civil service tests. The Chapter Representative of the New York Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta on the Cortland campus is Dr. Anna Curtis. Visit the Alpha Kappa Delta website for more information.

National Honor Society in Criminology
Alpha Phi Sigma

Students who major in criminology, have completed at least 42 credit hours, earn an overall average of 3.2 or higher and a 3.2 or higher in at least 12 hours of criminology courses, as well as a cumulative grade point average which falls in the upper 35 percent of their class, are eligible for election into Iota Chi Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national criminal justice honor society. Normally, invitations to join are sent out in March, and those accepting membership are honored at a luncheon held in May prior to graduation ceremonies.

The purpose of the organization is to encourage and recognize academic excellence in the study and practice of criminology. The Chapter Representative of the Iota Chi Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma on the Cortland campus is Dr. Mary Cannito-Coville. Visit the Alpha Phi Sigma website for more information.

Delmar C. Palm Award for Exemplary Volunteer Service 

The Delmar C. Palm Award is presented by the Sociology/Anthropology Department to a student majoring in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, or Archaeology who, like Professor Delmar Palm, has made exemplary contributions to the well-being of the community. First priority is given to volunteer work with off-campus agencies and groups in Cortland County. Work for pay or academic credit (e.g., internships, service learning) is not considered. The award will be presented at the annual honors luncheon held in April. 

Application Deadline: Friday April 2, 2027 by 4:30 p.m.

The United Social Science Majors Club

"Building Better Societies Together" 

The United Social Science Majors Club serves as a central hub for all sociological disciplines and beyond. The club is designed to create a foundation and bridge the gap between the classroom and the real-world, enabling professional networking, developing critical thinking skills, collaborative research and coursework, while allowing members to participate in campus and community focused events, and create a common ground for all interested to socialize and build academic and professional skills. You do not need to be a social science major to join or participate. The club is open to all who are interested in the social sciences, and participating in different themed events each meeting, alongside different events throughout the semester. 

Bi-weekly meetings on Thursday from 6pm-7pm in Moffett Room 111.
