Teaching Students with Disabilities Microcredential

The Teaching Students with Disabilities microcredential is designed for students who have initial or professional teacher certification and are seeking to obtain an additional initial certification in teaching students with disabilities. The three required courses include content related to learning about how to develop curricular, assessment and pedagogical skills needed for teaching students with disabilities with focus on utilizing strengths based perspectives to implement universal design, differentiated instruction and culturally relevant teaching practices.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Know, analyze and critique the construct of behavior disorders as described in education law including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Develop strengths- and needs-based assessment, diagnosis and evaluation of students with disabilities to create Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Describe and explain how to create supportive and inclusive learning contexts and how to proactively manage the environment for students with disabilities.
  • Develop learning activities with appropriate accommodations, differentiations, and service plans for meeting students' individual needs.
  • Consider the impact of ableism and ability narratives on families to better support students with disabilities and their families.

Certification and  Professional Use

This microcredential is a grouping of coursework (and a listing of other NYSED requirements) that can lead to an additional classroom teaching certificate, provided that the teacher candidate has obtained or will obtain an initial classroom teaching certificate in another area.

The details above are meant to provide general guidance for pursuing additional certificates. NYSED retains full discretion in approving coursework for certification. When applying for additional certificates, applicants must submit official transcripts directly to the NYSED Office of Teaching Initiatives for evaluation. There are no program codes for this process.
