Early Childhood Education Microcredential

The Early Childhood Education microcredential is designed for students who have initial or professional teacher certification and are seeking to obtain an additional initial certification in early childhood education. The two required courses include content related to applying early childhood principles and standards to create developmentally appropriate curriculum and resources for caring for and teaching young children from birth - 2nd grade.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of early childhood educational issues from multiple perspectives including history, philosophy, developmental theory and professional principles and standards.
  • Identify, design and evaluate developmentally appropriate play-based experiences, curriculum and resources for building relationships and promoting learning for all children.
  • Develop culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and inclusive practices for caring for children and teaching in diverse early childhood environments.

Certification and Professional Use

This microcredential is a grouping of coursework (and a listing of other NYSED requirements) that can lead to an additional classroom teaching certificate, provided that the teacher candidate has obtained or will obtain an initial classroom teaching certificate in another area.
