Jaroslava Prihodova
Jaroslava Prihodova, Dowd Gallery, opened her solo exhibition titled “Out of Objectivity,” on view from April 4 to 29 at The Elsie B. Rosefsky Memorial Art Gallery, Binghamton University. The exhibition includes small objects, jewelry and sculptures produced in the last few years. She will deliver her Artist’s Talk among her works at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 8.
Jeffery Swartwood
Jeffery Swartwood, Psychology Department, recently had his college textbook titled Educational Psychology published by BVT Publishing. The textbook covers traditional topics in the field, but adds a unique interdisciplinary perspective and expanded coverage for special learning needs.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled, “Flanagan’s Gun Permit, and Mine,” that was published in the New York Daily News on August 31. Spitzer argues that the man who shot a television reporter and cameraman in Virginia likely could not have obtained his gun had he lived in New York.
John Suarez
John Suarez, Institute for Civic Engagement, conducted his workshop, “Build Organizational Capacity: Invert the Triangle” at SUNY’s 5th Annual Applied Learning Conference.
Thirty-nine participants role-played situations in which directors of organizations can gain control by relinquishing control. Directors can relinquish (some) control when they trust their interns with specific responsibilities and authority; interns will reciprocate with innovative ideas and progress toward organizations’ missions. The associate director of SUNY’s SAIL Institute for Academic and Innovative Leadership is using this workshop’s materials as guides in designing a workshop for department chairs.
Will Montgomery
Will Montgomery, Communications Office, received the SUNY Council for University Advancement (SUNYCUAD) Judges’ Citation for Excellence in Photography/Individual Photograph for the Pan African Student Association Fashion Show. The photo, taken March 7, 2020 in Corey Union, is a runway shot of one of the many fashions designed and produced by students striving to raise awareness about African cultural heritage around the world. Montgomery covers campus events for the Communications Office’s social media accounts and university news services.
Carolyn Bershad
Carolyn Bershad, Counseling and Student Development, has been informed that the Counseling Center has met the criteria for full re-accreditation by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), the only association that accredits counseling services on university and college campuses. Accreditation by IACS is dependent upon evidence of continuing professional development as well as demonstration of excellence in counseling performance. The office offers individual and group counseling for students, as well as consultation and outreach to the campus community.
Quincy Loney
Quincy Loney, Mathematics Department, was invited to present selected results from his doctoral dissertation at the 1,072nd meeting of the American Mathematical Society held Sept. 10-11 at Cornell University. Quincy’s talk, “Decomposition of Level-1 Representations of D_4^(1) with Respect to its Subalgebra G_2^(1) in the Spinor Construction,” was given as a part of the special session on Kac-Moody Lie Algebras, Vertex Algebras and Related Topics.
Jeremy Pekarek
Jeremy Pekarek, Memorial Library, recently became a Certified Archivist (CA) through the Academy of Certified Archivists. This is a nationally recognized organization that ensures a standard of excellence in historical preservation and access to primary resources and collections. Qualified candidates took a lengthy examination to test their knowledge of seven required domains in archival theory including, (1) appraisal, selection, acquisitions, (2) arrangement and description, (3) reference services and access, (4) preservation, (5) outreach, (6) archival management and (7) ethical and legal responsibilities.
Mary Gfeller
Mary Gfeller, Mathematics Department and SUNY Cortland Noyce Scholars Kelsey O’Donnell and Robin Tobin presented “Teaching Math Using Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies” at the National Science Foundation 2014 Noyce NE Regional Conference held in March in Philadelphia, Pa. Perspectives on culturally relevant teaching strategies in teaching secondary math concepts were discussed using examples from real classrooms, including several from O’Donnell and Tobin’s current student teaching placement at Binghamton High School. The presenters explored the various strategies designed to make math more accessible and more meaningful to students.

Jeanine Rose, Academic Support and Achievement Program, presented at the 2015 New York College Learning Skills Association Symposium held April 19-20 in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. The title of her presentation was “The ‘Formula’ for Success: Putting Algebra to Work.”
