Thomas Lickona
Thomas Lickona, Center for the 4th and 5th Rs (Respect and Responsibility), has been invited to be a Distinguished Professor at the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at England’s University of Birmingham.
During the week of June 23-27, Lickona will present “Integrating Ethics and Excellence: Educating for Both Moral and Performance Character” as part of the centre’s biweekly seminar series, and he will confer with teams working on different research projects within the centre. The invitation was announced in the March 2014 issue of the Jubilee Centre Research and Policy Digest.
The 2014 Winter-Spring issue of excellence & ethics, co-edited by Lickona and Office Manager Marthe Seales, focuses on how schools and parents can combat the rising rate of dating violence and sexual assault, which have received growing national attention. Seth N. Asumah
Seth N. Asumah, Africana Studies and Political Science departments, was invited to write a guest foreword, “Rethinking African Philosophy in the Twenty-First Century” which is published in a new volume of the Value Inquiry Book Series. The book, Postethnophilosophy, is authored by Sanya Osha, a professor of philosophy and a research fellow at Tshwane University, Pretoria, South Africa. The book was published by Edition Rodopi B.V., Amsterdam, Netherlands. Andrew Fitz-Gibbon, Philosophy Department, wrote the editorial foreword for this book.
Celeste McNamara
Celeste McNamara, History Department, was appointed book review editor for the Journal of Religious History, published on behalf of the Religious History Association. The Journal of Religious History is an international, double-blind, peer-reviewed journal that aims to publish high quality, impactful scholarship and research that makes original and significant contribution to the field of religious history. The scope of the journal is the history of all religions and their relationship with the human experience across all time periods; the journal explores religion and its related subjects, along with debates on comparative method and theory in religious history.
Jacqueline Augustine
Jacqueline Augustine, Kinesiology Department, recently was a co-author on the manuscript, “Influence of sex and presence of cardiovascular risk factors on relations between cardiorespiratory fitness and cerebrovascular hemodynamics,” published in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Richard Kendrick
Richard Kendrick, Institute for Civic Engagement and Sociology/Anthropology Department, contributed the lead story that will appear on the front page of the Bringing Theory to Practice Winter 2014 Newsletter, a national publication mailed to more than 40,000 subscribers. His article spotlights SUNY Cortland’s ability to create a campus culture of engaged learning with Bringing Theory to Practice grants.

John Suarez
John Suarez, Service-Learning, learned that his book chapter, “Empathy, Action, and Intercultural Competence: A Neurological Rationale for Simulation’s Effectiveness in Developing Intercultural Competence,” was accepted for publication in The Intercultural Horizons Proceedings. The book is a collection of peer-reviewed presentations from the Second Annual Horizons Conference, held in October 2012, at SUNY Global Center in New York City. The conference theme was “Intercultural Strategies in Civic Engagement.”
Jacob Wright
Jacob Wright, Career Services, received the Central New York Career Development Association (CNYCDA) Student Success Champion Award at the CNYCDA annual meeting on June 2 in Dundee, N.Y. Wright is a career coach and educator. The award recognizes one professional in a 10-campus consortium for moving the industry of career development forward and promoting individual and group student success through student-centered programming.
John Suarez
John Suarez, Institute for Civic Engagement’s Office of Service-Learning, has been invited to conduct a Reflective Listening Workshop in January 2017 for employees of the MacCormick Secure Center in Brooktondale, N.Y. The Center is part of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth, of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
