Alger Hall

Alger Hall was built in 1967 and was named after Minnie M. Alger who taught music at the College from 1893-1925. Alger Hall underwent a major renovation in 2003, then again in 2025, which expanded the different housing options in the hall. 

Each floor in Alger Hall has two six-person suites comprised of three double rooms and two corridors with both single and double rooms.

Bishop Hall

Bishop Hall was built in 1958 and was renovated in 2006. The building is named after Maria Bishop who graduated from Cortland in 1881 and headed the School of Practice from 1881-1905.

Bishop Hall has a staff of seven RAs who are full-time, upper-class students.

Casey Tower

Built in 1972 and renovated in 2020, Casey Tower was named to honor the former director of housing at SUNY Cortland, James Casey '53. Casey began working in the college housing office in 1965 and continued there until his death in 1981.

The first floor features a remodeled lounge that includes movable walls, allowing for functions of various sizes. Upper floors have kitchenettes and lounge space. The main laundry facility is on the first floor, but floors nine and 10 have designated laundry units as well. Casey Tower has both corridor-style rooms and suite-style rooms throughout the building.

Casey Tower features four-person and six-person suites, corridor double rooms, and designed singles. Four-person suites have two bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge. Six-person suites have three bedrooms and larger bathroom and lounge. Casey Tower is primarily home to upper-class students.

Cheney Hall

Cheney Hall was built in 1950 and renovated in 2011. It is one of the original buildings on campus, named in honor of Francis J. Cheney, the Normal School Principal from 1891-1912.

Cheney Hall consists primarily of double rooms off of a T-shaped corridor with residents living on all four floors. There are also deluxe rooms, consisting of two rooms and a shared lounge space.

Clark Hall was built in 1965, renovated in 2000, and is named after William H. Clark who was the chair of Cortland’s local board from 1891-1925.

DeGroat Hall

Created as part of the Cheney-Brockway-DeGroat project, construction of DeGroat Hall was finished in 1950, and renovated in 2016. Originally called South Hall, DeGroat was later named after Harry DeWitt DeGroat, the third principal of the Cortland Normal School.

Fitzgerald Hall

Fitzgerald Hall was built in 1962 and is named after Lawrence J. Fitzgerald who served as the New York State Treasurer. He was a member of the local board of the College for 30 years.

Glass Tower Hall

Glass Tower Hall is SUNY Cortland’s second newest residence hall, constructed in 2005. This cutting-edge residence hall was awarded a prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the United States Green Building Council. LEED certification is based on stringent energy conservation measures and the environmentally safe materials used in its construction.

Hayes Hall

Hayes Hall was built in 1959 and renovated in 2005.  Hayes is named after Ina Hayes who taught at Cortland from 1917 to 1953. Hayes is one of six low-rise residence halls that were constructed between 1957 and 1962 on the SUNY Cortland campus.

Hendrick Hall was built in 1959, and renovated in 1999.  Hendrick is named after Mary Hendrick who taught English and elocution at Cortland from 1869-1904. Hendrick is one of six low-rise residence halls that were constructed between 1957 and 1962 on the SUNY Cortland campus.

Higgins Hall was built in 1965 and renovated in 2001.  It is named after Cortland community member Dr. R. Paul Higgins, who was on the Cortland Board from 1917-1948 and headed it the last 24 years of his tenure.

Randall Hall

Randall Hall is one of six low-rise residence halls that were constructed between 1957 and 1962 on the SUNY Cortland campus. Built in 1961, the building is named after Henry S. Randall who was the first president to serve on Cortland’s local board, until his death in 1876. Randall Hall is a three-story corridor-style building with double rooms. The building re-opened in Fall 2010 after the latest renovation project.

Shea Hall

Shea Hall was built in 1956 and is named after James M. Shea who was a Cortland native and graduated from the College in 1896. James M. Shea also taught at his alma mater for eight years before becoming a school administrator and city councilman in Syracuse, N.Y.

Shea Hall Highlights

  • Air-Conditioned: No
  • Bathrooms: Gender-specific, multi-use on each wing
  • Class Years: Primarily freshmen
  • Co-ed: By room (ie. women in one room, men in the next)
  • Elevator: None
  • Furniture: One twin extra-long bed, desk, desk chair, wardrobe, dresser per person (exceptions for temporary triples)
  • Internet: WiFi throughout building; Two ethernet ports per room
  • Kitchens: Located on first and third floors with sink, oven/stove, microwave
  • Laundry: Located on ground floor, cost is included in meal plan

Smith Tower

Built in 1972, Smith Tower is named to honor SUNY Cortland past President Donnal V. Smith, who became president in 1943. He led the college for 15 years and provided the vision for unprecedented growth in faculty, student body and facilities at SUNY Cortland. Each tower features four-person and six-person suites. Four-person suites have two bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge. Six-person suites have three bedrooms and a larger bathroom and lounge. Suites in these building are open to upper-class and new students.

West Campus Apartments

West Campus Apartments is a 15-building complex located one mile from campus. Each building houses four separate apartments with four single bedrooms, at least one full bathroom, full kitchen and living/dining room. The apartments come fully furnished. 

The complex also contains a recreation center with laundry facilities, vending machines, mail, lounge, student staff office and the professional staff's office. 

West Campus Apartments provides the independence of apartment living along with the available support from the Cortland campus in the form of student staff, a professional staff, maintenance staff, university police coverage and other campus resources. West Campus Apartments offers a very affordable on campus housing option as you are not billed for a meal plan. You have the flexibility of choosing a meal plan or doing your own cooking.

  • The apartment complex is on the campus bus route so you may easily get to campus
  • Parking for those with cars is located on-site

Special Interest Housing at West Campus Apartments

  • Over-21 Building
    • Students who choose to live in the over-21 building must be 21 by Aug 31 for the fall semester or Jan. 1 for the spring semester.
  • All gender housing
    • All bedrooms are single occupancy.
    • Bedrooms are not designated as male/female.
    • Shared spaces include the kitchen, living room, dining room and bathroom. The bathrooms are private and lockable.
    • You can request to live there as a new student or sign up as a returning student during the room selection process.
    • Must sign the all gender living agreement.

Parking

All West Campus Apartments residents that own a vehicle are eligible for one “W” permit with the following stipulations:

  • Only one permit per West Campus Apartments resident
  • The permits will only be issued per semester; you will be required to order another in the spring semester if you continue living at West Campus Apartments
  • Order your “W” permit online once student permits go on sale
  • The permit may only be used on a vehicle registered with DMV in your name or that of a family member; anyone found using the permit in any other vehicle will have the permit revoked
  • If you do not own a vehicle, you will not receive a discount in any other form
