Living on Campus
SUNY Cortland offers a variety of on-campus housing options designed to support student success, community engagement and personal development. Residence halls include traditional corridor-style buildings, suite-style living and apartment-style spaces, allowing students to find a living environment that best fits their needs.
Each residential community is staffed by trained student and professional staff who work to create safe, inclusive and engaging living environments. Students benefit from convenient access to campus resources, academic support and opportunities to build connections within their community.
Important Housing Information
Housing cost
Current housing rates can be found on the Student Accounts page.
Living off-campus
Students must meet the on-campus housing requirement before moving off campus. Students to enter SUNY Cortland as first-year students are required to live on campus for their first four semesters and transfer students are required to live on campus for their first two semesters at SUNY Cortland.
Students who wish to move off campus before completing this requirement must submit a Release from Housing Request through the housing portal and receive approval prior to signing an off-campus lease.
Roommate Disagreements
After your student has moved in, they will fill out a Roommate Agreement Form with their roommate. This is a time where they can talk about study and sleep habits, guests and sharing items. Students should be as honest as possible with each other when completing the roommate agreement.
If a conflict arises between roommates, they discuss the concern and refer back to the agreement. If the conflict continues, first seek out the RA for floor. The RA will set up a time to meet with the students to talk through the concern and reach a compromise. Please keep an open mind through the mediation process and remember that living with others requires flexibility and compromise.
Maintenance Requests
Students who live on campus can submit a work request through our housing portal. If the problem is urgent and needs immediate attention, the student should contact the Area Coordinator, facilities, or UPD immediately.
Internet Access
All of our residence halls are equipped with both an ethernet and wireless Internet connection. All residents will need to register and create an account with GIG Telecom. Residential students can connect to CortlandResNet by selecting CortlandResNet and typing in the following password: RedDragon1868! From there you will need to register your device, please see the ResNet guide for more information. For CortlandResNet support, contact the GIG Telecom helpdesk, via phone at 888-970-1180, or email at [email protected]. Routers and range extenders are not permitted on campus
Renter's Insurance
The university is not responsible for damage and/or theft of student property. The University recommends that all students who live on campus carry renter's insurance. You may wish to review your family’s homeowner policy for potential coverage, or look into purchasing a separate renter's insurance policy.
MicroFridge Rental
You may bring your own refrigerator to campus as long as it is: UL approved; grounded with a three-prong plug; and no larger than 5 cubic feet. You may also rent a combination microwave/refrigerator called MicroFridge through the university rental program. Please note that this is the only microwave approved for hall rooms.
