There are groups of students that call themselves a fraternity (or a sorority) when in reality they are neither. They are simply using Greek letters to try and legitimize their presence. None of these groups are recognized by the university and none of them are connected to a legitimate National fraternity (or sorority). These groups are unrecognized and in some cases, banned, from having a presence at SUNY Cortland.
These groups are not actual fraternities (or sororities) and have no University oversight. Students should not put themselves at risk by "joining" or "associating" with these groups. Doing so would put a student in violation of SUNY Cortland's Student Code of Conduct and they could be suspended. These groups will try to recruit first semester first year students even though the school does not allow students to join an actual fraternity/sorority until their second semester. Please make positive decisions and avoid these groups. Do not put yourself at risk.
Recognized student organizations would be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct if they chose to host, co-host or otherwise interact with an underground group. They would be held accountable and would put the future of their recognized organization at risk.
Underground groups are listed below along with their nicknames and the Greek letters for those names. There are no female underground groups at this point in time.

- Delta Chi or DChi ΔΧ
- Delta Kappa Beta or Kappa ΔΚΒ (Permanently banned)

- Omega Delta Phi or Omega or ODPhi ΩΔΦ
