Alger Hall Fall 2024 Renovation Preparation FAQs

Renovation Preparation FAQs

  1. What is happening with Alger Hall?
Alger Hall will be closing for renovations at the end of Fall 2024 semester. Students in Alger for the fall will be reassigned to a new space for the Spring 2025 semester. The updates to Alger will include new mechanicals, curtain windows, new roof, new flooring, new furniture and some other upgrades.
  2. When do I have to move out?
Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, at 9 p.m. is the latest that students will be able to stay in the building. It is very important that all students make arrangements to move everything out immediately following their last exam, or by 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, whichever is earlier.
  3. Is Cortland providing any packing materials?
We will be providing boxes to students who need them starting on/around Nov. 1. We recommend that students start to take some of their belongings home during Thanksgiving break to make move-out in Dec. easier.
  4. What has to be moved out?
Alger Hall will be completely emptied starting on Dec. 13, 2024. Students must remove 100% of their belongings (we will take care of micro-fridges) from the building. And, equally important—students must double check all nooks and crannies to be sure that no items are left behind, as residence life will not have the opportunity to go back into the building and check for any missing items. Furniture removal and demolition will begin immediately after students leave the building.
  5. Where will I live in the Spring 2025?
In an effort to make the best housing assignments possible (not the fastest), Alger residents will receive their Spring 2025 assignments on Jan. 17, 2025. The longer that we wait to make the housing assignments, the more likely it is that we will be able to meet more students’ preferences.
  6. When will I find out where I am living in the Spring?
In late October, students will receive an email communication inquiring about their Spring housing preferences. We will make every effort to place students with their preferences, but it will depend on what spaces become available throughout campus at the end of the Fall semester. It will be highly unlikely that suite groups will be able to stay together in the spring as full suites are unlikely to be open for the Spring 2025 semester in other buildings on campus. Our goal is to keep groups/roommates in the same building (ie. everyone from a suite lives in the same building), but it is likely that some groups will be in different buildings. We will do our best to keep as many groups together as we can.
  7. Is on-campus storage available?
No, unfortunately, on-campus storage is not available. Students will be provided with boxes starting on Nov. 1, and will be expected to remove all of their belongings from the building.
  8. What will happen to the micro-fridge that I rented?
Prior to moving out during finals week (Dec. 9-13, 2024), please clean and unplug the micro-fridge in your room. Our team will remove the micro-fridge from the room and deliver it to your new room for the Spring 2025 semester.
  9. Will I be in a triple for the Spring 2025 semester?
Fall 2024 Alger residents will not be placed into a triple for the Spring 2025 semester.
  10. Will I have priority housing for Fall 2025?
Fall 2024 Alger residents will have priority selection preference for the newly renovated Alger for the Fall 2025 semester.
