Emergency Management

About Us

The Emergency Management Office coordinates a comprehensive program designed to: prevent, prepare for, respond to, mitigate the effects of, and recover from any emergency or disaster, whether human-caused, natural, or technological, that could pose a danger to the community or disrupt University operations. The office provides leadership, vision, direction, and subject matter expertise in the field of emergency and incident management regardless of incident type, scale, scope, or complexity.

Using an “all-hazards” approach, the office’s main goals are to identify threats and hazards, effectively mitigate emergencies and disasters, respond to “all-hazard” emergency situations, and facilitate an effective recovery following an emergency or disaster.  The office also conducts situational awareness monitoring, training, emergency preparedness and response education, and emergency planning for large-scale incidents and events.

The office works with numerous campus and local partners to ensure an effective and efficient response to emergencies and incidents that could affect the campus and the community. Every day the office strives to provide the highest quality of service possible to our community: the students, employees, and visitors of SUNY Cortland.

SUNY Cortland is proud to be a StormReady institution certified by the National Weather Service.  The StormReady program measures preparedness and response capabilities in several categories.  Less than 300 Universities nationwide have received this designation.  Additionally, the Emergency Management Office is also recognized through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador.  The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative is NOAA’s effort to formally recognize NOAA partners who are improving the nation’s readiness, responsiveness, and overall resilience against extreme weather, water, and climate events.

Emergency Preparedness and Response Guide for Community Members

Like any institution or municipality, SUNY Cortland may be impacted by a number of natural, technological, and human-caused hazards that can affect University property, students, employees, and visitors. Hazards, emergencies, and disasters (also referred to as “incidents”) can strike at any time with little or no warning.  In effort to strengthen our "whole community" and institutional resilience, all employees and students should familiarize themselves with the University's Emergency and Response GuideThis guide provides a general framework for emergency preparation and response for campus campus community members.  The guide can be found by visiting cortland.edu/emergency

Emergency Notifications

The SUNY Cortland Alert System is the comprehensive emergency alert system that allows the university to quickly disseminate an urgent message through multiple communication mediums.  This is one component of the university's wide-reaching emergency communication strategy, with the goal of providing a safe and secure environment in which to learn, live and work.  If there is a condition which significantly threatens the health and safety of persons on campus, university officials will warn the campus community through a variety of notification methods:
