Set up a meeting with your academic advisor prior to your time ticket
Your academic advisor is here to help you succeed—don’t wait until the last minute to get their expert advice. Here's how to get started:
- Know Who to Contact: Your advisor is likely a faculty member in your major's department. You can find their name at the top of your Degree Works or in Starfish Connections.
- Schedule a Meeting: Look for an email from your advisor with instructions on how to book your advising appointment. Didn’t see one? No worries—it's still your responsibility to reach out and get on their calendar!
- Come Prepared: Review your major and degree requirements ahead of time. Jot down any courses you’re interested in or questions you want to ask during the meeting.
- Be Punctual: Make the most of your advising session by showing up on time. If you need to reschedule, let your advisor know in advance.
Review your time ticket and Holds
Don’t let anything delay your registration—take a few minutes to check for any holds and know when you can start registering for classes:
- Find your time ticket: Use the “Preparing for Registration” link on the Student tab in myRedDragon to see the day and time you can begin to register (Time Ticket) and to see if you have any holds that may delay your registration.
- Take care of Holds: If you see a hold, don’t panic! Follow the instructions in the alert box or contact the "Originator" to determine how to resolve it. Be aware some holds may not be automatically lifted. Plan ahead to avoid conflicting with your time ticket.
- Check Course Restrictions: If you’re eyeing a class with restrictions (like retakes or major-only sections), reach out to the department offering the course before your Time Ticket opens to see if they can lift the restriction.

Review Degree Works
Take control of your planning and progress by reviewing your degree works:
- Review Your Program Information: Review your Degree Works worksheet to confirm you are in the correct major, minor or concentration.
Review Required Courses: Identify courses you need, such as General Education, major, or other college requirements. Pay attention to course sequencing and prerequisites. - Credit Check: Review the overall number of credits you need to graduate and develop a plan for graduation. All majors have a sample four-year plan in the University Catalog.
