Advising Readmitting Students

Students returning to campus after time away must first apply for readmission. Once readmitted, they will reach out to you for academic advisement. Because these students are not currently on campus, your support helps them reconnect to our Cortland community and prepare for a successful return.

Time Ticket and Registration PIN
Readmitting students won’t appear in your myRedDragon advisee contact list. Your department’s administrative assistant will email you their time‑ticket and PIN.

Advising Appointment
Since readmitting students are not on campus, advising appointment should occur by phone or virtual meeting.
If a student has changed majors and is new to your department, take time to welcome them and explain unique features or expectations for your program.

Registering for courses
Students will login to myRedDragon to register for classes at or after their designated time-ticket. A PIN is needed until  the semester drop/add period. During drop/add, no PIN is required.
Students registering closer to the star of the semester should be prepared to submit payment shortly after registering (approx. 72 hours). For billing deadlines and details, students should contact Student Accounts.

Retaking a course
Students returning from academic suspension or dismissal are encourages to consider retaking courses, as doing so can significantly improve their GPA and help them in return to good academic standing.
Students receiving financial aid need to ensure they register for at least 12 “new” credits in addition to the retake if they previously earned credit for the course (e.g. grade of D). For questions about how retaking a course may affect financial aid eligibility, students should contact Financial Aid.

Registration Restrictions
To retake a course, register for a closed course, or enroll in a majors only section, the department administrative assistant for the department offering the course must override the registration restriction (or “lift the flag”) in Banner so the student may register via myRedDragon.
Because readmitting students cannot easily visit departments on-campus, consider assisting them with this process.

Reapplying course exceptions
If a student previously had course exceptions or substitutions in Degree Works, these must be reapplied (if still appropriate). Any exceptions not currently applied appear at the bottom of the audit. To reinstate exceptions, contact the Registrar at [email protected].

Follow-up
Encourage student to schedule an appointment with you early in the semester once they return campus to touch base and discuss how their classes are going. If GPA is a concern, complete a GPA repair kit together to  help them set realistic goals. Refer students to campus resources to help them be successful (e.g. Writing Center, Learning Center, etc.)
