Undergraduate Programs
The Physics Department offers 4 undergraduate degree programs, as well as a minor for students not majoring in physics. Our majors can be thought of in terms of technical-focused and education-focused programs.
Technical Degrees
These programs are ideally suited for students who wish to pursue a career in industry, government, or to continue their studies of science or engineering in graduate school.
- Physics (PHY) - the classic physics major, which includes free-elective courses to allow students to pursue a minor, second major, or various subjects of personal interest
- Physics leading to the 3+2 Engineering Program (PEN) - the combined physics and engineering major, also known as the 3+2 program since you can earn 2 degrees in 5 years (3 year at Cortland and 2 years at an engineering school)
Adolescence Education Degrees
These programs prepare students to become high school teachers. Our APH program allows students to get an optional certification for middle school by taking one additional class.
- Adolescence Education: Physics (APH) - single subject certification in physics
- Adolescence Education: Physics and Mathematics (APM) - dual subject certification in physics and mathematics
Minor in Physics
- Physics minor - Requires 21 credit hours of introductory and advanced physics courses
Graduate Programs
The Physics Department offers a master's degree program in adolescence education.
- Adolescence Education: Physics (7-12) [APH] M.A.T - this master's program features a range of graduate-level education and physics courses
