Scholarships/Awards

The State University of New York College at Cortland offers several scholarships and awards for students in the Performing Arts Department.

Charles T. Griffes Scholarship Griffes was born in Elmira, NY and studied piano and composition in Berlin. His Compositions show influences from German Romanticism, French Impressionism and Russian and Japanese styles. Donna K. Anderson, SUNY Cortland Performing Arts Chair (1985-92), dedicated much of her life and career to researching the life and music of Charles T. Griffes, traveling internationally to lecture, perform and record his works. $2,000 award given each spring to a qualified musical theatre major.
Helen Y. Nelson Memorial Scholarship Professor of Home Economics Education at Cornell University 1958-1983. Helen was highly respected for her contributions to research in vocational educational practices, techniques and evaluation. She and her husband Carl resided in Cortland where he taugh in the music program at the State University.
Spiegle Willcox Scholarship As a Jazz Tombonist, Spiegle’s career spanned 7 decades and took him all over the US and Europe performing as a soloist and in bands such as The Collegian’s and The Jean Goldkette orchestra. He performed at Carnige Hall and on the Tonight Show. Though he traveled far and wide, he always considered Cortland home. $500 award given annually to a student in the Musical Theatre Program
Music Performance Endowed Scholarship Music performance endowed scholarship Awarded to a freshman musical theatre student who demonstrates excellence and commitment in their music studies.
Adams-Hill Scholarship Established by Roger C. Hill, professor emeritus of speech and theatre arts and named in honor of Hill and the late William W. Adams, a past member of the Speech and Theatre Arts Department. $300 to $500 award given annually to an outstanding graduating senior in the theatre program who has made major contributions to the program's productions and who has at least a 3.0 GPA.
