Brightspace Migration Training for Faculty

Access to Brightspace is available now.

Once logged into myRedDragon, faculty members have a “Brightspace” tab, choose the “Access Brightspace” link and the SUNY Brightspace Fundamentals Course can be found under the My Courses tab. First-time online instructors can expect to take six to ten hours to complete the course. Experienced users of Brightspace can complete the training in one to three hours.

SUNY Cortland Instructional Designers provide introductory training to all faculty in the Brightspace environment. All Brightspace workshops require registration.

Optionally, the SUNY Center for Professional Development (CPD) will be providing additional Brightspace Fundamentals training for faculty. Training opportunities for faculty are available now. The CPD will be offering training in three modalities (Self-paced Asynchronous Online, Scaled Webinars, and Remote Synchronous) in order to accommodate faculty training preferences. In addition to the choice of modalities for the training, the CPD has also identified four levels of training speed and individualized attention (Spark, Ignite, Blaze, and Bonfire) so faculty can self select the pace of their training based on their expertise and comfort levels with learning new technology. Regardless of modality or pace selected, faculty must successfully complete a series of online assessments in order to earn a Brightspace Fundamentals Certificate and Badge from the SUNY Center for Professional Development.

On Campus Assistance

On campus, the Design Help team will be providing assistance to instructors. Completion of the Brightspace Fundamentals Training is strongly encouraged. If you have not yet completed it, you should complete it and submit the certificate of completion to the Brightspace Certification link. Many of your questions or concerns may be answered in this training. For more information or assistance with Brightspace, email designhelp@cortland.edu

Selecting the Training Pace That is Right for You

Everyone learns new technology at their own pace and SUNY CPD has created a system to help you pick the most efficient learning path and pace for your Brightspace training. To determine the appropriate training path and pace for you, please complete SUNY’s Training Path Self Assessment. Answering the questions on the survey will present a training recommendation that best fits your expertise and comfort level with technology. The four pace levels SUNY has identified are described below.

Spark

Designed for those who are:

  • Somewhat apprehensive of technology, frequently requires extra time to acquire technology skills and comfort.
  • Limited skills with an LMS.
  • Uncomfortable with undefined jargon.
  • Rarely attempts new technology or actions independently.

Training Recommendation: Synchronous Remote Workshops at the “Spark” pace, with supplemental Scaled Webinars.

Ignite

Designed for those who are:

  • Neutral regarding new technology but occasionally needs extra time to acquire technology skills and comfort.
  • Competent with an LMS but benefit from repetition when introduced to new tools and technology.
  • Hesitant to try new technology or actions independently.

Training Recommendation: Synchronous Remote Workshops at the “Ignite” pace, with supplemental Scaled Webinars.

Blaze

Designed for those who are:

  • Skilled in technology, utilizes current LMS well.
  • Quick to learn new skills by observing and independently applying what they have learned.

Training Recommendation: Scaled webinars combined with the asynchronous modules.

Bonfire

Designed for those who are:

  • Very skilled in technology, utilizes current LMS intricately.
  • Ready for specialized tools/options.
  • Requires little-to-no hands-on instruction or assistance.

Training Recommendation: Asynchronous modules, supplemented with scaled webinars, if necessary.
