SUNY Cortland was among 119 U.S. colleges and universities The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected recently for its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. These newly named institutions join the 76 identified in the 2006 selection process.

SUNY Cortland’s Seven Valleys Writing Project will hold its first annual winter conference, “Teaching and Writing with Authority,” a professional development conference by teachers for teachers, on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the College.

Four guest choirs will raise their voices in praise with the SUNY Cortland Gospel Choir during the 23rd African American Gospel Music Festival on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the College.

The New York Times sports editor Tom Jolly will discuss the newspaper's coverage of the 2008 Olympics during a talk on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. in Sperry Center, Room 204. Jolly will be joined by Justin Sablich, a 2005 graduate of SUNY Cortland, who produces Web news for the sports desk at The New York Times.

Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement and the pioneer of civil disobedience, will give the keynote address at the conference, themed on “Resisting the War, Educating for Peace.”

The SUNY Cortland Alumni Association has named its alumni house, an elegant and historic 15,000-square-foot mansion in Cortland, in honor of the College’s first-ever individual $1 million donor — Lynne Parks Hoffman, a 1968 alumna who resides in Portland, Ore.

A SUNY Cortland associate professor of psychology is making house calls to help parents and scientists better understand babies.

Stephen Burwood of Geneseo, N.Y., the assistant provost for international affairs at SUNY Geneseo, has been appointed as director of the James M. Clark Center for International Education at SUNY Cortland.

State to win Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED is an internationally recognized proprietary designation of the USGBC.
