College, Community Seek 10 AmeriCorps Volunteers to be Funded by $99,944 Grant

Ten new AmeriCorps volunteer positions will be filled starting as early as July 1, almost doubling the AmeriCorps program, which assists with outreach and community revitalization and improvement programs in Cortland County. The AmeriCorps positions will be funded by a one-time $99,944 federal grant, said the project director, Richard Kendrick, who chairs the Sociology and Anthropology Department and directs the College's Institute for Civic Engagement. The money was awarded to SUNY Cortland and the community by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), with funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

Techno_Culture Exhibition at Dowd Gallery Through June 26

"Techno_Culture," an exhibition of works from artists utilizing numerous forms of electronic technology in their creative process, opened on May 28 in the Dowd Gallery at SUNY Cortland. The opening was highlighted by a live performance by one of the featured artists, Jesse Stiles. The show runs through Friday, June 26. Gallery summer hours through September are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and by appointment. Group tours are also available.

Associate Provost Paula Warnken to Retire Aug. 27

Paula N. Warnken of Cortland, N.Y., who served SUNY Cortland for 16 years, will retire on Aug. 27. She has been designated associate provost emerita for information resources. Since joining the College in 1993, she has been responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for all technology and library services, developing policies, setting priorities and providing resources to fulfill the institution's instructional and administrative goals.


History Professor Sanford Gutman to Retire

History Professor Sanford Gutman to Retire

Sanford Gutman of Ithaca, N.Y., who has served on the SUNY Cortland faculty for 37 years, will retire on Aug. 31. He has earned the designation of professor emeritus of history. Gutman, who grew up in Detroit, Mich., focused on history as an undergraduate at Wayne State University and earned his master of arts and doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan, specializing in modern European history.

English Lecturer Vaughn Copey to Retire

Vaughn A. Copey of Camillus, N.Y., who has taught at SUNY Cortland since 1980, will retire on Aug. 31. He has been designated lecturer emeritus of English. Copey grew up in Auburn, N.Y. He obtained an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from Cayuga County Community College in Auburn, N.Y., before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Literature and a Master of Arts in Language and Literature from SUNY Oswego

Dianne M. Galutz Retires from College on May 27

Dianne M. Galutz of Cortland, N.Y., who has served the College for 21 years, will retire on May 27. She has earned the designation of senior programmer/analyst emerita. A native of Cortland, she received an Associate of Sciences from Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) in Dryden, N.Y., and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland.

Professor Jean LeLoup to Retire

Jean W. LeLoup, who has served SUNY Cortland for 16 years, will retire on Aug. 31. She has earned the designation of professor emerita of Spanish. LeLoup is on a leave of absence from SUNY Cortland since the 2007-08 academic year to serve as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., a role she also fulfilled from 1995-96.

Margaret Waltman Receives Inaugural Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Classified Service

Margaret "Peg" Waltman, a keyboard specialist in the SUNY Cortland Registrar's Office, has been honored with the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Classified Staff. She received the prestigious award during the 2009 Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, May 16, in the Park Center. The award was newly created by SUNY this year and Waltman becomes the first SUNY Cortland recipient.

Pierre R. Gagnon to Direct Auxiliary Services Corporation

Pierre R. Gagnon of Clayton, N.Y., will serve as executive director of the Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC) at SUNY Cortland, the organization announced on May 11. Gagnon, who currently serves as executive director of the Faculty Student Association of Jefferson Community College, begins his duties on June 29.

Joy Hendrick Named Distinguished Service Professor

The SUNY Board of Trustees promoted Joy L. Hendrick, a SUNY Cortland professor of kinesiology, to the rank of Distinguished Service Professor during its May 12 meeting in Fort Schuyler, N.Y
