Proprietary Assemblage of Figurative Minds
Permanent Collection Exhibition
This selection of artworks focuses on figurative works in a range of materials and techniques, including stone carving, printmaking, drawing, and cast iron. They reflect a human presence distributed between the artist's real and imaginative worlds. The figures isolate, converge, distort, and materialize as viewers traverse through the exhibition. Some become the environment, and others become entities as the assemblage of works evokes moments captured in time, perhaps intermittently lost to it.
This curation is as much a textural exploration of form as it is of space. The globular forms of Ronald Gonzales seem to comfortably bridge the fluidity of Salvador Dalí’s prints with the minimal linear expressions of the other artists on display, especially Harold Altman.
Highlighted in the exhibition’s west wing, viewers will find the opportunity to compare and contrast the artwork of Francisco Goya, and Le Corbusier. These two prints provide a striking visual contrast while maintaining a figurative presence in collaboration with the main exhibition.
“Proprietary Assemblage of Figurative Minds” was curated around the animate figures of Ronald Gonzales. The exhibition selection focused on figurative works from the collection that established a dialogue, physically or contextually, with the moving figure triptych. This is demonstrated physically through the mark-making, form, and space of the selected pieces. The exhibition draws the viewer through a lineage of abstractions, from Fang Hui’s Nature I sculpture that merely suggests a figure, through many distortions, to the two clearly defined figures in Goya’s intricately detailed etching. Each artist provides a distinctively signature style to the exhibition, drawing the viewer into each domain.
