Revealing Roots: Origin Stories is an initiative that brings together immigrants from the SUNY and broader Cortland community to create and share visual narratives of their origins. These are stories from across the globe that have helped to build and continue to shape this small patch of society in Upstate NY.
Developed by Kim Khánh Nguyễn-Nalpas, visiting scholar this semester with SUNY Cortland’s Psychology department, Revealing Roots invited local communities to share personal experiences and historical lineage to highlight experiences of immigration to the United States of America through a creative process.
Fourteen participants enthusiastically contributed works of art, artifacts, stories, installations, videos, and live performances for an exhibition celebrated on May 11, 2026, in Dowd Gallery. Participants included SUNY students, faculty/staff, and local community members in stoic voice celebrating the cultural roots of our localized community.
