Students arrive in Brightspace with a wide range of comfort levels. This slide deck from Lisa Sieg, CTL Instructional Designer, walks them through the essentials so they can spend less time hunting for things and more time engaging with your course. It's written directly to students, so it's ready to share as-is.
What's covered
The deck moves from first-login setup to day-to-day coursework:
- Getting set up: confirming their Cortland email, locating courses by semester, and personalizing their profile with a photo and pronouns
- Staying informed: setting up email notifications, using the Brightspace Pulse app (for notifications only), and finding the calendar, Work To Do, and Activity Feed on desktop and mobile
- Communicating: when to use announcements, discussions, Brightspace email, and instant messages to reach professors and classmates
- Doing the work: finding assignments, discussions, and quizzes, checking grades and feedback, and downloading course files in alternative formats such as audio, ePub, or tagged PDF
Ways to use it
Consider linking the deck in a "Start Here" module, showing a few slides during the first week of class, or pointing students to it when Brightspace questions come up. Students who need more help can contact the Help Center in Memorial Library B-103, at 607-753-2500, or at [email protected].
