Mission

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports our community through developing and delivering engaging and innovative teaching resources for faculty and staff. We collaborate with offices, departments, and individual faculty members to improve teaching effectiveness and student success. We support faculty and staff in every unit to ensure that Cortland provides equitable, accessible learning environments, advancing the university’s principles through well-researched, data-driven design

Mission We partner with faculty to create inclusive, engaging, and equitable learning environments that support student success and persistence. Relying upon evidence-based, data-informed teaching practices, we help instructors foster meaningful student-faculty interaction, clarify expectations, and create a sense of belonging for all students.

Red Dragon Wellness in Teaching and Learning

Mission

We support faculty and student well-being and resilience by promoting inclusive course design, supportive learning environments, and assignment structures that build confidence through low-stakes, iterative practice. Our work strengthens student persistence by helping faculty create spaces where all students feel they belong and will succeed.

Objectives

  • Support faculty in designing learning environments in multiple modalities that promote belonging and student agency.
  • Promote high-impact, low-stakes, and iterative assessment strategies that help students build resilience.
  • Provide faculty with tools, including learning technologies, to increase accessibility and offer timely feedback.

Life and Career Foundations

Mission

We help prepare students for meaningful lives and careers by encouraging faculty to integrate skill development, reflection, and applied, experiential learning into their teaching. Our work supports students in connecting academic learning to personal growth, professional goals, and civic engagement.

  • Help faculty design learning experiences that build transferable skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.
  • Promote reflective and applied learning activities that connect coursework to life and career readiness.
  • Work with faculty to design resources that utilize new technologies and anticipate changes in the career world.

Institutional Collaboration and Capacity Building

Mission

We collaborate with campus partners to align and amplify faculty development efforts, helping educators navigate and maximize existing resources. By streamlining support and improving visibility of opportunities, we build faculty capacity for effective, efficient, and evidenceinformed teaching.

  • Partner with existing programs to clarify and expand faculty development opportunities.
  • Promote the use of learning technologies and analytics to help faculty make datainformed decisions.
  • Build institutional capacity for collaborative, coordinated, and sustainable teaching support.
  • Build an institutional culture that embraces diversity and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Collaborate with SUNY Online to enhance both Cortland and SUNY teaching and learning resources
