Don't let COVID-19 win the Super Bowl

02/05/2021

The following message was sent to students Friday, Feb. 5, by Vice President for Student Affairs Greg Sharer:

Super Bowl weekend is here, an American tradition typically marked by viewing parties and piles of food.

And, this year, possibly COVID-19.

Favorite Super Bowl practices can pose serious health threats during pandemic. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. It just means you need to be careful. Before the game, please consider the following tips:

  • Skip large gatherings. The safest way to watch the 2021 Super Bowl is with a small group of friends, preferably your housemates. Remember, limit all social gatherings to no more than 10 people. On-campus gatherings are limited by the max occupancy in residence hall lounges and only one guest is allowed in a room.
  • Wear a mask. This is especially important if you chose to watch the game from a restaurant or other establishment. Whenever you’re not actively eating or drinking, your mouth and nose should be covered. Don’t worry, it won’t stop you from cheering.
  • Keep space between yourself and other people. Stay roughly one horizontal Tom Brady apart.
  • Keep your hands out of the chip bowl. Communal finger food can help the virus spread. Wash your hands frequently and think before you nosh.
  • Remember that the health of other people depends on your actions. More than 430,000 people in this country have been killed by the virus, often because somebody unthinkingly put their own comfort and convenience above the welfare of people in their community.
  • Be aware that SUNY Cortland students must follow the same COVID-related guidelines required on campus when they are off campus. The coronavirus does not respect campus boundaries.

Enjoy the game. After your sacrifice and hard work over the last year, you deserve it!

All the best,

Greg Sharer, Vice President for Student Affairs
