New Student Checklist

For undergraduate first-year and transfer students

Congratulations on joining the SUNY Cortland community! Now that you have paid your admissions deposit, complete the following steps to make your transition here as smooth as possible.


Get Started




SUNY Cortland ID#

Know your SUNY Cortland ID#, or C# (C00….) and familiarize yourself with myRedDragon

Following acceptance

Immunization and Health History Forms

Complete your medical forms: Medical History Report, Tuberculosis Screening Form and Under 18 Consent Form (PDF, if needed) and return them to the Student Health Service Office.

Dec. 1 or as soon as possible after that for late admissions.

Students with disabilities

If you are a student with a disability, complete the Self-ID Form and return with the required documentation to the Student Disability Service Office.

As soon as possible


Complete your Housing Preference Form in myRedDragon or complete the New Student Off Campus Approval Form (PDF).

Beginning Dec. 1; Submit by Jan. 1

Financial Aid

Review and accept/decline your financial aid award letter through myRedDragon. Be sure to regularly review the financial aid checklist. (Note: only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for federal financial aid.)

You will be notified by the Financial Aid Office when your award letter is ready.

Orientation Registration

Register to attend a First-Year Orientation or Transfer Orientation and Advisement session through myRedDragon.

Dec. 18

Course Registration

Complete your Transfer Information Form through myRedDragon.

Jan. 4

AP, IB, CLEP and College Course Credits

Request your AP, IB and CLEP exam scores and college transcripts to be sent to SUNY Cortland, Admissions Office, P.O. Box 2000, Cortland, NY 13045. Also bring copies to Orientation.

As soon as possible after final grades are posted


Submit your final high school transcripts to the Admissions Office, P.O. Box 2000, Cortland, NY 13045. Final transcripts should clearly identify your date of graduation, if applicable.

As soon as possible after graduation


Attend your Transfer Orientation and Advisement to register for courses. (International students will receive information from the International Programs Office about your separate, mandatory Orientation program.)

Check your schedule

After Orientation 





Regularly check your Cortland email account through myRedDragon. All official communication from SUNY Cortland will be sent to this email account (ex. student bill, course schedule updates, etc.).

Beginning mid-November

Meal Plan

Review your meal plan options and make any changes through your myRedDragon.

Review and pay your student bill via myRedDragon.

Beginning on/about Dec. 9; Complete by Jan. 11


Order your textbooks.

Check out what to bring. This list contains all the essentials for living on campus, including the size of your bedding.

Contact your future roommate(s) about what they are bringing to avoid bringing two of everything.

Emergency Contact

Add/Update your information for our campus emergency notification system through myRedDragon.

Code of Conduct

Become familiar with the Code of Student Conduct and understand your rights and responsibilities as a member of the campus community.

Check out clubs and organizations so that you can learn about how to get involved and meet people.

Parking Permit

Purchase a parking permit if you plan to have your car on campus.

Course Schedule

Reprint your semester course schedule in case of any course changes (locations, instructors, etc.).

Upon Arrival to Campus 




ID Card

Pick up your SUNY ID card from the ASC Office in Neubig Hall. Bring a photo ID and your SUNY Cortland ID number.

Attend Transfer Connect events and Welcome activities!

Check myRedDragon for important messages, email, etc. This is SUNY Cortland’s primary method for communicating with students.


Attend the first day of class on Monday, Jan. 25!

Be sure to view your schedule on myRedDragon prior to attending class in case of any location changes.
