Cortaca licensing

About the Cortaca trademark

In the summer of 2012 Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland began a Licensing and Trademark Enforcement program for the Cortaca Jug football game. The two schools, participants for 53 years in the annual football game, became co-owners of the registered trademark "Cortaca" and partners in a trademark and licensing program for “the biggest little game in the nation.”

Any vendor creating merchandise (apparel, bags, writing utensils, mugs, etc.) bearing the protected term "Cortaca," whether for on-campus departments or organizations, or for third party vendors to sell in stores, must be set up as an official licensee and go through an approval before using the term on any merchandise.

Please email cortaca@ithaca.edu or marketing@cortland.edu with any questions related to the Cortaca licensing program.

What is protected?

  • The name Cortaca®
  • The ® symbol is required after the word Cortaca on all merchandise
    • Following AP and Chicago Style the ® symbol is not used inline in textual printed and electronic content (non-merchandise)
    • Examples: press releases, print or online articles
  • If the merchandise says Cortaca® anywhere on it, it must go through the Cortaca® Licensing Program and follow the program standards.

Colors

SUNY Cortland’s official colors are red and white and should be used in all internal and external materials. Black is included in our primary palette because it appears in the logo.

Color values

The color value used depends on the medium:

  • Use PMS or CMYK in print and on items such as apparel and signs, etc.
  • RGB or web values are for electronic/digital use.

Primary colors

Brand collateral should lean heavily on our primary colors of red, white and black. The primary red should be used in a significant and meaningful way to act as the identifying color of the university.

Secondary colors

The secondary colors may not be used in place of the primary colors or become the predominant color for a school, center, institute, department/office or program.

These softer, more muted colors reinforce our brand while complementing the vibrant, saturated red (PMS 186) from our primary palette.

Restraint must be used with secondary colors. It is important to maintain a sense of hierarchy, balance and harmony when using this color palette
