Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Microcredential

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) microcredential is designed for students who have initial or professional teacher certification and are seeking to obtain an additional initial classroom teaching certificate in TESOL. The  required courses include content related to linguistics, English grammar, methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages in all grades (Pre-K - 12), and effective pedagogical practices for teaching English language learners mathematics, literacy, science and social studies content.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Know and use applied linguistics including morphology, syntax, phonology and variation when teaching English as a second language.
  • Describe and apply English grammar from a three-dimensional perspective including structure, meaning and use.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of theoretical linguistics and analyze language using linguistic terminology.
  • Create lesson plans that include learning activities and supports necessary for teaching English language learners mathematics, literacy, sciences and social studies.

Delivery Mode

Undergraduate courses (ICC 301, 302, 303, and 402) are offered in-person.

Graduate courses are offered online asynchronously during the fall and spring semesters.

Professional Use

The microcredential is also open to undergraduate students in any program seeking to teach English as a foreign language overseas after graduation.
