FAQs

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions from new participants.

Give it to me straight. How far do I have to walk or run?

The Corporate Challenge follows a flat, out-and-back course measuring 3.5 miles along Onondaga Lake Parkway in Liverpool, N.Y.

I’m not a runner. Should I still sign up?

Of course! Many people walk the entire 3.5 miles or choose to alternate between walking and jogging. The final walkers will usually cross the finish line between 80 and 90 minutes after the start.

When you register, you will be asked for a predicted finish time. This time does not need to be exact, but it will help guide you to the best place to start at the event.

More than competition, SUNY Cortland’s emphasis at the Corporate Challenge year after year is bringing together colleagues outside of work in a fun and active setting.

How many people usually participate?

The J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge is one of the largest running and walking events in the Central New York region, attracting more than 6,000 participants in 2019. SUNY Cortland typically fields a team of approximately 30 to 40 employees from across campus.

Do you provide transportation to the event?

You bet! SUNY Cortland covers a shuttle with round-trip service to campus.

The bus traditionally departs promptly at 4:10 p.m. from the bus stop between Park Center and the Professional Studies Building. The bus usually arrives back on campus after 9 p.m.

Where can I pick up my SUNY Cortland shirt and bib number?

Your SUNY Cortland shirt, bib number and pins will be available in the days leading up to the event, usually in the afternoon hours in the Business Office, located in Miller Building, Room 330. Exact details for 2020 will be provided at a later date.

If you cannot pick up your bib number and shirt during the specified time, you can grab them at the event. If possible, please contact a team captain to let them know you would like it brought to the event.

Is there anything special I should bring to the event?

Comfortable shoes and clothes are a must. A sweatshirt for after the sun sets is a good idea too. You can also bring a backpack with any personal items — sunscreen, rain jacket, sports drinks and so on.

In addition to the catered food spread, SUNY Cortland provides bottled water. Feel free to bring any beverage of choice for before or after the event.

What’s the catered food spread?

In recent years, SUNY Cortland has ordered food through Limp Lizard, a barbecue restaurant in Syracuse. The menu has included pulled pork, chicken, turkey wraps, veggie wraps, macaroni and cheese, tomato cucumber salad, baked beans, black beans and rice, roasted corn, coleslaw, cornbread, fruit and a cookie platter.

Could the event be canceled due to weather?

Central New York weather can be unpredictable, but the event usually takes place rain or shine. In the event of extreme heat or lightning, the start time or event format could change.

Something came up and I can no longer participate. Can I receive a refund?

Once you sign up for the event, SUNY Cortland is committed to paying for your full entry fee, so no refunds are available. However, you can still receive your SUNY Cortland team shirt if you are unable to participate.
