16th Research Symposium (2024)

CEO's 17th Biennial Research Symposium was held February 6-8, 2024, at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly, Black Mountain, NC, USA. Highlights included the following:

  • Pre-Symposium Session on “Character Education through Outdoor Education” facilitated by facilitated by Pete Allison from Penn State University, Jamie Brunsdon from University of Memphis, and Paul Stonehouse from Western Carolina University
    • This 4-hour pre-symposium session provided an overview of current conceptual approaches to character education and recent research. One example that was detailed is a recent four-year study of Outward Bound as a Character Building Organization emphasizing cross cultural approaches, similarities and differences (supported by the John Templeton Foundation). The session provided opportunity for dialogue around character, character education outdoors and potential implications for research and practice.
  • Keynote Address: “Toward a Pedagogy of Rewilding: A Neo-Aristotelian Interpretation of Outdoor Education” by Jamie Brunsdon
