Maurice Daniel “Maurey” Schmaier

Maurice Daniel “Maurey” Schmaier, who held several positions at SUNY Cortland between 1967 and 1989, died on Jan. 31, 2024. He was assistant professor of English from 1967 to August 1971, an instructor in the English Department from 1971 to 1972 and he held a temporary position as assistant professor in English in 1975. Also, in 1974 he was assistant professor in the Department of Black Studies. From 1976 to 1989, Schmaier was employed in the SUNY Cortland’s College Store. During his time there, the Sept. 20, 1976, issue of The Bulletin reported that Schmaier received the “Trout Conservationist of the Year Award” at the August convention of the 30,000 member Trout Unlimited in Boyne Falls, Michigan. A 1989 Bulletin faculty/staff announcement notes that he wrote an article, “20 Steps to a Do-It-Yourself Buyback,” which appeared in the College Store Journal, a publication of the National Association of College Stores. His articles in Journal of American Folklore and Midwest Folklore as well as his dissertation are available online through Memorial Library.
