SUNY Cortland lost a true champion for women’s athletics and persons with disabilities, when she passed away at age 91 on Dec. 28 in Gaffney, S.C. A member of the physical education faculty from 1962 to 1985, Moseley helped advocate for women’s sports in the pre-Title IX era, serving as the College’s Director of Women’s Athletics. She also pioneered the curriculum in adaptive physical education with her course Physical Education for the Exceptional Child, which she co-taught with colleague Suzzane Wills. Louise was inducted into the Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame as an honorary member in 1985.
In addition to her significant accomplishments in women’s athletics and academics on campus, Moseley was in charge of the women’s outdoor education program at Raquette Lake for many years. She is remembered fondly by many of her former students, including members of Theta Phi Sorority, who raised money to restore and name the Moseley Glass Dining Room after her in 2005 and the Huntington Staff House Porch in 2013. A sentence on the porch plaque lovingly reads, “With laughter and joyfulness, Dr. Moseley took each group of young women and taught them to support each other and work together so they could accomplish any task that confronted them.”
