Policy Statement and Committee Procedures on Conflict of Interest

The College Research Committee serves as the peer review and recommending body for several internal granting/funding opportunities within the College. Given that committee members may be both eligible and within their right to apply for grants/funding within these programs, the Committee recognizes that real or potential conflicts of interest may arise.

As a matter of policy, the Committee has adopted the following procedures:

  1. If a committee member has a current or pending application/proposal that is being considered by the Committee:
    1. As a sub-school, library, or professional representative within the Committee, that member shall have the right to participate in the discussions and votes of other applications.
    2. That member shall not be present for, nor participate in, the Committee discussions involving his/her application/proposal.
    3. That member shall not be present for, nor participate in, any Committee vote involving his/her application/proposal.

  2. If the committee is involved in policy/procedural decisions that may affect funding levels for a program for which a committee member has a current or pending proposal or application:
    1. That member, as a sub-school, library, or professional representative within the Committee, shall have the right to participate in the discussions.
    2. That member shall not participate in any Committee vote that may affect funding levels for the program.

  3. In addition to the above stated above policy, the Committee recognizes that there may exist other unforeseen examples of conflict of interest. It is therefore the policy of the Committee that any individual committee member shall disclose any personal interest that he or she may have in any matter pending before the Committee. In cases of doubt, he or she should seek the advice of the Committee Chair and disclose the relationship in question.
