Student Select 2024 and BFA thesis exhibition "In the Weeds," Dana Garrison
April 15 - May 3, 2024

Dowd Gallery hosts a dual spring exhibition featuring "Student Select"  and the BFA exhibit "In the Weeds."

Students Select is an annual exhibition of student artwork featuring a vibrant curation of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital media, fibers, and prints. It is a creative display of Cortland student artwork curated by artist and educator Carla Stetson.  The exhibition is located in the gallery's Main and East wings.

In the Weeds, a BFA exhibition featuring the paintings and mixed media drawings of Dana Garrison will be located in the gallery's West wing.

Dowd Gallery and the Art Exhibition Association invite you to “Student Select 2024,” a juried exhibition of student artwork from the 2023-24 academic year. Juror, professional artist, and educator Carla Stetson, has selected exceptional examples from all levels of studio courses available in the Art and Art History department. Works on view include sculpture, drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, fibers, digital, print media, and more.

Student Select is sponsored by the Art Exhibition Association (AEA) and Dowd Gallery to celebrate excellence in studio art from courses offered through the Art and Art History Department at SUNY Cortland.  Students enrolled in the 2023-24 academic year are encouraged to submit works of art to a juried curation exhibiting achievements through process, design, and conceptual intention.  This year, 76 artworks were selected from over 100 entries representing outstanding student participation.  Carla Stetson, who recently retired from Ithaca College, had a tactful and attentive approach during her selection process. Distinguishing between foundational techniques and advanced studio concepts, her multi-disciplinary experiences in visual art guided her thoughtful curation of the exhibition.

This year, Dowd Gallery Awarded 6 individuals for outstanding achievement in studio arts.

Each piece is a portrait created with sprawling lines of ink or vibrant paint, delving into the complexities of human interaction and exploring themes of love, loss, and resilience. From intimate portraits to overgrown plant life, “In the Weeds” invites viewers to navigate the tangled undergrowth of human connection, offering glimpses of the beauty and challenges in our lives.
