Graduate Assistant for Prevention and Wellness

Qualifications

  • Required
    • Acceptance into a SUNY Cortland graduate program in Community Health, Health Education or a related field
    • On-campus availability
    • Ability to work and communicate effecively with students, faculty and staff
    • Ability to participate in outreach and tabling events
    • Ability to discuss substance use and misuse with students on a one-on-one basis
  • Desired 
    • Interest in working in a health-related field
    • Knowledge about substance use/misuse and harm reduction
    • Comfortable talking about relationships, consent, sexual violence and interpersonal violence
    • Experience coordinating events and meetings
    • Experience working with digital marketing software (Canva, etc.)

Relation to Educational Program

The Graduate Assistantship in the Prevention and Wellness office contributes to the education of a student pursuing a degree in the Community Health, Health Education, or related field by providing hands-on experience with outreach and education surrounding substance use and misuse, the overlap between substance use and an individual’s mental health, harm reduction strategies, and prevention of sexual violence.

Responsibilities

  1. Aid in planning and facilitating outreach and education events relating to substance use/misuse, harm reduction strategies, and sexual violence prevention
  2. Attend and contribute in meetings with the Prevention and Wellness Coordinator
  3. Hold brief intervention meetings with students referred to the Prevention and Wellness Office from Student Conduct
  4. Attend weekly supervision meetings with the Prevention and Wellness Coordinator
  5. As time permits, assist in data collection, including assessing, implementing, and evaluating programs and trends in substance use within the college population

    Salary/Stipend

    $7,000 for the academic year. Work obligation is 20 hours per week 

    Tuition Support

    Six graduate credits for the academic year
