ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview

Language Testing International (LTI) updates test availability periodically. Visit LTI for a complete list of available OPI testing languages or for more information on scheduling an assessment.

Students may earn up to 12 credits from an Oral Proficiency Interview Exam:

  • 101 = Beginning Level I (3 credits)
  • 102 = Beginning Level II (3 credits)
  • 201 = Intermediate Level I (3 credits)
  • 202 = Intermediate Level II (3 credits)
  • 3XX(1) = 3 credits of an upper-level elective course.  For Spanish language exams, a substitution for SPA 306 may be considered for Spanish native/heritage speakers upon department approval/recommendation.
  • 3XX(2) = 3 credits of an upper-level elective course. To earn credit for such a course, a student must score at least an Adv. Low (categories III-IV) or Adv. Mid (categories I-II) on both the Oral Proficiency Interview and the Writing Proficiency Test.
    • If students do not take the Writing Proficiency Test and score high enough for 3XX (2) credit, they may earn 3 credits of 102 level instead.
