SUNY Cortland has a long-standing and well-deserved reputation in the field of physical education. We are proud to offer undergraduate students the opportunity to earn a B.S.Ed. as well as a B.S.Ed. with a concentration in adapted physical education. The program also offers special options to study abroad, including study at the Deutsche Sport hochshule in Cologne, Germany and at the University of Ballarat in Australia. Students may also apply to student teach in Australia
The primary purpose of the B. S. Ed. program is to offer students professional preparation leading to certification to teach physical education K-12 and coach in New York State public schools. This certification is also recognized by other states. The program includes theory, activity courses and student teaching experiences. Students will complete 100 hours of fieldwork prior to student teaching.
Physical Education [PEM]
This major in the Physical Education Department prepares students to become physical education teachers in grades K-12. A concentration in adapted physical education is also available to interested students. Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Education in Physical Education and satisfactory performance on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations, students may apply for initial New York state teaching certification in the field of physical education.

The adapted physical education concentrationin the Physical Education Department is designed to provide an opportunity to gain experience and knowledge working with children and adults with disabilities. This program prepares students in both leadership and practical skills needed to provide optimal physical education to all students.
Practical experiences include but are not limited to sports and games,inclusive outdoor education, dance, aquatics and fitness programs designed specifically for the inclusion of persons with disabilities into existing lifetime fitness, recreation and leisure activity.
