Qualifications
- Required
- Acceptance into a SUNY Cortland graduate program in Health, Physical Education or a related field
- Undergradaute degree in physical education
- Effective communication and writing skills
- Effective organizational skills
- Desired
- Previous experience with teaching (can be student teaching)
- Completion of EDU 355 and familiarity with the structure of the course
- Familiarity with lesson planning, assessment, instruction, and reflective practices of teaching
- Strong managerial skills
Relation to Educational Program
The graduate assistant assists with observation of students during lab and field experience, teaching lab set up and oversees the work of the professional learning groups (PLG) during planning time for field experience. The graduate assistant reports any questions or concerns raised by students during the PLG meetings to the faculty, and supports the instructors with the facilitation of the lab and field experience hours across one to two sections of the course.
Responsibilities
The duties of the EDU 355 graduate assistant include:
- Supervising and assisting undergraduate teacher candidates with classroom teaching, lab, and field experience work with instructor
- Assisting in tracking and collecting work of the professional learning groups during field work hours for the instructor
- Reporting student questions and concerns raised during PLG meetings to instructor regarding assignments such as lesson planning, and assessment
- Maintaining a presence in the department as necessary
- Assisting faculty with teaching laboratory and field experience set up, facilityation, and teaching candidate feedback
- Other duties as assigned by the EDU 355 course coordinator and Department Chair
Salary
Stipend of $1750.00 per semester, plus tuition waiver for up to 3 credit hours of graduate work per semester
