Graduate Assistant - Cortland Adapted Swim Team (CAST)

Position

Head coach for the Cortland Adapted Swim Team (CAST), Assistant Coach for the varsity Swimming and Diving teams

Qualifications

  • Required
    • Acceptance into SUNY Cortland graduate program 
    • Previous undergraduate coursework in working with people with disabilities 
    • Experience in aquatics
  • Desired
    • Undergraduate degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Special Education or related field
    • Experience coaching, teaching, swimming competitively

Relation to Educational Program

The graduate assistant for the Cortland Adapted Swim Team (CAST) gains experience working with people with disabilities, overseeing and mentoring college students who work with participants, and planning/organizing practice sessions.  The student may also have the opportunity to register CAST as a United States Swimming (USS) club team, and prepare participants to compete in sanctioned events

Responsibilities - During practices

  • Open, supervise and close facilities for practices
  • Observe for safety (consistent with the expectations of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course and United States Swimming)
  • Log attendance of participants and college students
  • Give students feedback and direction during practices
  • Share information about the SIMS/MSE on SUNY Cortland social media channels

Responsibilities - Before and after practices

  • Design and implement workouts for participants
  • Log practice results (volume swum by participants, recording timed swims, new skills worked on and old skills reinforced)
  • Informing parents of meet/practice schedule - including changes
  • Bi-weekly meetings with program director to discuss student performance
  • Meetings with program director to discuss goals and strategies
  • Option to attend Southern Tier Swim League swim meets and meetings

The second half of the graduate assistant's responsibilities will include working with the intercollegiate swimming and diving teams. The individual will be responsible for ten hours of assisting the head coach. Duties may include administrative work, on-deck coaching or other tasks as assigned by the coach.

    Salary

    Stipend of $7000.00 per year, plus tuition waiver for up to 6 credit hours of graduate work per semester
