November 2009 is International Education Month  at SUNY Cortland!

International Education Month is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

This annual initiative aims to promote international understanding and build support for international education exchange by encouraging the development of programs that prepare Americans to live and work in a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the United States.

International  Education Month is an expansion of International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.

Movie Series

The Institute for Civic Engagement would like to extend an invitation to your department and students to join us in the upcoming movie series: Untold Stories.  The meaning behind the title, "Untold Stories," is to describe important societal and world events from perspectives that are not often heard or are often misinterpreted.  The series reinforces the academic theme "WALLS" by breaking down ideological walls.  The movies will be shown in Brown Auditorium of Old Main at 7 p.m.  In the month of October, the focus will be "Examining the Media."  In the month of November, the focus will be  "Effects of U.S. Intervention Abroad."  The following is a list of the movies, their dates, and a brief synopsis of what each documentary is about.  Please feel free to contact Timothy Rodriguez at timothy.rodriguez@cortland.edu or (607) 753-4271 for any questions that you may have.

Thursday, October 8: Manufacturing Consent

This film, based on the intellectual work of MIT Professor and Linguist, Noam Chomsky, demonstrates how, in Chomsky's words, "corporate media, as profit-driven institutions, tend to serve and further the agendas of the interests of dominant, elite groups in the society."

Thursday, October 15: Outfoxed

Takes a look at, as one movie reviewer put it, "whether and how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have an active campaign to misinform people for personal gain."

Thursday, October 22: Orwell Rolls in his Grave

Follow along as media specialists discuss various stories and news events that went unreported or misreported, while examining how and why the media can be misleading.  This movie "talks about the one thing that the media doesn't like to talk about: itself".

Wednesday, November 4: The War on Democracy

This documentary looks at the United States' military involvement with Latin American democracies, focusing on  Venezuela, Guatemala, Chile, and Bolivia.

Brown Auditorium of Old Main at 7 p.m.

Thursday, November 12: Peace, Propaganda, and the Promised Land

Explore the US-Israel-Palestine conflict and the U.S. media that reports it.  "Is Peace Possible?"  The answer may be less complicated and controversial than you think.

Thursday, November 19: Breaking Ranks

Takes an intimate look at the lives of United States soldiers who have deserted the military and moved to Canada to seek refuge from the war in Iraq.  Hear soldiers' testimonies of military actions they say they witnessed or were involved in during the war.
